I could have misunderstood it but I thought there was something on the Greek morning TV news the other day about heating subsidies for pensioners.
Has anyone come across this and, if so, have you any information about the conditions for qualification?

Still trying to find out more, but one of the conditions is that you live in a cold area of the country, so, unless you live at the top of a mountain, you won’t be getting much here in Crete.

Just found this link, which gives a bit more info. Sounds like a nightmare to actually see any kind of refund!

Thanks for the information so far. I’ll keep on looking and let you know if I come across any more information on the criteria to be met so as to qualify.

I see they have supposedly started paying out refunds. Anyone have any info on qualifying conditions and how to apply?

Latsida, you are trying to annoy me aren’t you? I am one of those punished by the UK Government for leaving the UK before my 60th birthday. This means I do not qualify for heating subsidy. Had I left the day after my 60th birthday, I would get it.

Not sure where the logic is, but I’ve long since given up looking for logic in the tax system, Greek or British.

same here , qualifying for the allowance I mean not the logic, and yes that was meant to be a wind up  :D ;)

                                            Naughty!!!

That Express article is more helpful. It’s for some friends and it looks like they may well qualify. I no longer buy heating oil since we moved. Good thing too.

Andrew, you can get the Winter Fuel allowance if you fulfil certain criteria.

                                                Look at https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment/how-to-claim

My husband was also 60 after we left the UK (and fulfils the criteria in the form) – we now receive WFA – much appreciated in the current financial climate.

Well, I got quite excited for a while there!

But looking at the criteria, they seem to be saying that you would have to have lived in the UK during the week commencing Sept 17th!!

Leaving aside the fact that I did not, is it not a bit strange that you only have to be in UK that one week per year to get WFA.  Would it pay for my ticket I wonder?

                                                    Andrew (bemused of Milatos)

EDIT: Actually the more I think about this, the more bizarre it seems. Can anyone shed any light?

Make sure you look at the correct form – ie the one for people living outside the UK. Part 3 is asking if you were in prison/hospital etc during the qualifying week – ie, if so, you would not be entitled. The questions about working in the UK and/or being entitled to a pension do not mention that week. The fact that they want your NI number enables them to make the necessary checks on your status, I imagine!

We do not have a permanent address in the UK so thought this excluded us. It does make our blood boil when we hear of people who get their WFA, have no UK address and were not in the UK on the required dates.

As we know of no one in the UK who is not receiving WFA afraid that is end of story for us. :'(
