UN – International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)).

Saint Andrew’s Day (Bank Holiday in Scotland only)

If ever Saint Andrews falls at a weekend then the following Monday is to be the public holiday in Scotland in lieu. It was in January 2007, the St Andrew’s Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act was given royal assent, making 30 November a unique bank holiday to Scotland.

UN – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December, recalls the date of the adoption, by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (resolution 317(IV)of 2 December 1949).

UN – International Day of Disabled Persons

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appoints Stevie Wonder, on this day in 2009 the internationally celebrated musician, as the new UN Messenger of Peace at UN Headquarters. His appointment certificate was given as a Braille document.

UN –  International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

IVD was established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December.

UN – International Civil Aviation Day (ICAO)

In 1996, pursuant to an ICAO initiative and with the assistance of the Canadian Government, the United Nations General Assembly by resolution officially recognized 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day to foster the interests of all countries in a safe and economically viable air transport system.

UN – Human Rights Day

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says: "Discrimination targets individuals and groups that are vulnerable to attack: the disabled, women and girls, the poor, migrants, minorities, and all those who are perceived as different. But these victims of discrimination are not alone. The United Nations is standing with them, committed to defending the rights of all, and particularly the most vulnerable.  That is our identity and our mission."
