Budget supermarket, Dia in Malia is terrific news as it is within walking distance from the mentioned Filippidis and Xalkiadakis supermarkets and from the National Bank of Greece, the local Malia Post Office and conveniently located ‘watering holes’.
Filippidis (also known as Ariadne) and Xalkiadakis in Malia always seem more expensive than other supermarkets, but then they do have a larger choice. Let us see if the entry of Dia into the town makes any difference.
It saves the trek from Lasithi to the Dia above Hersonnissos that seems to mainly cater to the hospitality industry (bulk purchases) or the large Dia outlet next to Carrefour in Heraklion.
By the way, anyone unfamiliar with Malia – if driving from Heraklion/Hersonissos on the main road it is the last turning (small side road) on the right, as stated, by the Alpha Bank which is about 50 metres before the main cross roads in the town by the big church.
