You drive out of Chania and take the Omolos road past the prison and on out for seven or eight miles. I don’t know the name of the road we turned right onto to get to the dam but can probably find out. It’s a thirty minute drive from the centre of Chania, so not that far.
After visiting the dam the project manager (Takis) took us to his snail farm a few minutes away – although he prefers if we call them escargots – which wasn’t quite as awe inspiring but still interesting.
I should perhaps mention that I’ve known Takis for eight or nine years and last night after an excellent meze and copious amounts of Raki he asked if we’d like to come past and take a look at his ‘baby’.
