Go inland a bit to Arghyroupoli. Gorgeous scenery, always appreciated by people who haven’t been there before; interesting history and – in the valley below on the road to Asi Gonia – some terrific restaurants serving some of the best Cretan food on the island. The Old Mill particularly recommended. Not expensive, and the portions are enormous.
