Hi Gem,
the property tax is a yearly tax on properties worth over 400,000 euros in 2010 and 200,000 in 2011 plus they probably use the objective value rather than the actual market value.
this Tax is not to be confused with the property duty payable with your electricity bill, the road tax obviously applies to everyone with a vehicle.
I have no problem with either and I only know a couple of expats in this area with homes worth in excess of these amounts.
ps. I do not include the area of Elounda which I am sure has homes worth millions 8-)
