Aegean Airlines Moves its London base from Stansted to Heathrow

In case you missed it, the Greek carrier that sports those leather seats – Aegean Airlines is moving its twice daily flights between London Stansted and Athens to London Heathrow from October 25th. This follows Aegean’s acceptance into Star Alliance (set for June 2010) and is in response to the travel requirements of the UK market to Greece.
        The flight departure times are:
        LHR – ATH A3 603 12:45 – 18:30[ch8232]LHR – ATH A3 607 20:20 – 02:05
        ATH – LHR A3 602 09:10 – 11:15[ch8232]ATH – LHR A3 606 17:20 – 19:20
There is a choice of economy and business class seating.
Aegean took over Cronus Airlines several years ago which also used London Heathrow as its airport in London.

PS. Star Alliance includes key airlines United, Lufthansa, SIA, Thai and a number more.

I have usually managed direct flights from gatwick to chania , (or bristol to heraklion) but I realise they only do direct flights in the summer. I will have to travel in the winter this year so wondered if connections from Athens were good and are they large planes? ( I’m a bit of a wimp and hate small planes).Would you know the best company and best route?
I live near Bristol but LHR or gatwick isn’t too difficult.

I’ve used both Olympic, from Heathrow, & Aegean from Stansted both via Athens to Heraklion. I’ve also used Easyjet from Gatwick & BA from Heathrow to Athens  & then Aegean onto Heraklion. All during the winter months.
I’ve been VERY impressed with Aegean. Heathrow is my nearest airport & I’ve 2 return flights booked with Aegean for November & January.
The one BIG advantage with using the same airline ie Aegean or Olympic is that if you miss your connection in Athens due to flight delays they re-book you on the next available flight free of charge. You would probably have to pay extra, or the cost of a new flight if using 2 different airlines.
The Aegean planes flying to London are all brand new airbuses & the staff are good.

                Ros.

Thanks Ros,useful info-I take it from your answer that planes from Athens are quite frequent? Heathrow is certainly better for me than Stansted ,but Chania is much better than Heraklion so I hope there are some nice big planes that fly there.
Haven’t seen Crete in the winter yet-looks rather wet!

Yes, the flights from Athens to Heraklion are quite frequent, most of the planes are new/fairly new 733’s. They also fly several times a day to Chania from Athens. If you look at their website I’m sure you’ll find something to suit you.

They are actually 737’s normally on this route, plus occasionally British Aerospace AVRO RJ 100’s.

Although the Avro planes are a bit older and a bit smaller than the 737’s, they have 4 jet engines and give the smoothest take off/landings you will ever experience !!

Thanks Bob,doesn’t mean much to me but I shall look them up. As long as they’re not little 50 seater type planes I should be alright! Prefer a jumbo jet !! ;D

                                    I’m glad you posted this.
I have some flights booked with Aegean out of Stanstead on 1st November and they haven’t contacted me about the change. At least I now have time to contact them and get it sorted out.
                                    Geoff :'(
