        April 25th comes round again

The Greeks remember. The Allied Alliance (UK, France, US, Canada etc) remember. But most of all it is a special day across Australia and New Zealand. And, taken very seriously.

This year this is a very good article for families who have relatives who were involved in the Invasion of Crete in 1941. This was a major turning point in the Second World War. The Nazis never again carried out a massive paratrooper invasion anywhere in Europe after their Crete incursion.Entrance Souda War Cemetery

If ever you have the chance and you are visiting Crete, or live on the island, catch up on a piece of history from WW2 and visit the Souda Bay War Graves Cemetery in Chania north coast area for the Allies,  and/or the Maleme German War Cemetery, further to the east of the island, but still in Hania Prefecture also on the north coast.  If you hire a car and drive around the West of the Island there are sombre reminders of the price paid by civilians in a war zone, not just in Maleme and Souda. A very poignant time to remember with the Ukraine crisis unfolding currently.

Here is an up-to-date good read and timely source of history to be reminded of the brave men and women in Crete.

Lest we forget the brave Aussies and Kiwis on Anzac Day

Postscript Fact: It should not be forgotten that many soldiers from the Commonwealth (then the British Empire) such as from the Indian subcontinent who were killed in Greece in the period from 1941 to 1944 along with the Polish soldiers were also laid to rest at the central Phaleron War Cemetery, just outside of Athens.
