I have not been to Crete for several years so would like to ask local forum members if they notice the current rental prices for car hire on Crete, eg day price, 3 day price and more etc including deals but mainly for less than 7 or 8 days, ie if they pick up from airport & return if 7/8 days.

I am not asking for myself as would use favoured friends first, but I am a member on a Swiss forum so wish to advise neutral prices/ advice on this occasion, as a guideline. Said people (2 initially maybe 3, but unlikely) are looking for holiday within Greece & gently pointing them in direction of Crete, but feel they may need to alter their dates slightly to get  a better deal on Charter holiday, rather then schedule flights at short notice.

My friend rented a small car (new Peugeot) from Chania airport in May and the price per day for two weeks was €19. We paid this same per day price seven years ago (for a battered old Punto) when building our house.

                hi Moggy
I hired a mid range car  …I think it was a suzuki swift ..could be wrong??  ..early april at Chania airport for a week it was £120,, and I will also be having a car at Heraklion on Friday coming , also for a week 140 euro …both booked through "economy cars" whom I discovered redirect you to a local hire company, but the car was in vg condition but there is a damage waver (£500 ish).  I normally book through "Athens cars" " whos prices are a little dearer but I now realise they offer full cover including damage waver, but cars can be a little older ..though I have used them many times and never had a problem.  Fridays car I have requested a Ford Fiesta but it depends on which company I am directed to   this week it is "National"   next trip I will go back to Athens cars as I know what to expect with them. ( and no damage waver to worry about) .
As topdriller mentioned I have been paying much the same prices for years , though a little dearer in peak season.

                    Jon & Brian

Thanks very much for the replies. Interesting that car hire prices has stabilized in recent years.

Off subject I have heard of small apartment complexes now offering full board to get clients, apparently they do that with a tie up with one or more restaurants. They do that to try and compete with the fully inclusive resorts.

I am still interested in the car hire prices for say one to three days, as sometimes the airport transfers are part of the package, ie not an add-on, though usually it is an add on, so then a good reason to get car hire for the full week or two, taking account of the saving using the money for transfers towards the car hire. There are some people who only want a car for one to three days, they don’t want to drive much on holiday, particularly if that is something they do as part of their job.
Would it be something like 40euro for one day and 100 euro for three days hired locally?

Your estimate of 40 euro and 100 euro should be there or thereabouts Moggy.
One thing to consider, I often book with Thomas Cook when going to Agios Nikolaos, which is where we are going on Friday, and the transfer is included in the package price, but the journey on a bus from Heraklion airport to our hotel takes aprox 2.1/2 hours (many other hotel drop offs on the way) ..so I have a car at the airport which takes me 45 minutes. OK it costs me extra in fuel but after sitting on a plane for over 4 hours another 2.1/2 on a bus would drive me nuts. ….plus I get to the hotel first and get any problems sorted out before the crowd arrives.

                            Brian, thanks

you are right about the consideration. One time, my flight was delayed 4 hours at Gatwick, but it was the long coach journey from Heraklion that almost killed me, because of the other drop-offs.

Never got the coach again after that.

Bet you are counting the days

When we lived in the UK we always used Athens. Cars not always the newest but reliable and my wife put the insurance to the test when she hit a goat one dark evening!

When we moved over here I even bought one of their ex-rental cars as a second run about and again everything went like clockwork.

Only praise for Babis and his team.

Hello – it is always worth checking out http://www.arguscarhire.com. They are part of "car trawler" and check most of the hirers on Crete and have usually come up with a the best prices (mostly Olympic/Elite)
                                            Have used them for years.
