We’re newbies, just joined but have looked in on the site for some time. We live in Cyprus but are coming to Chania for five days next month.
Can anyone recommend a car rental company for pickup at Chania airport? I’ve looked at a number online but I’m concerned about tales of massive excesses on CDW and collision/theft damage . Are there any small (familiy) rental outfits?
Many thanks in advance.
John & Trish
For car hire we recommend http://www.kretarental.gr. Kreta offer a wide choice of quality cars at affordable rates and hve never known them overcharge, even on a very delayed flight, and other car hire companys where charging 25 euros..

We booked a car on-line once to pick up at the airport & it seemed a good price.
Luckilly my other half is a good driver, there were problems with the car & we had wondered if the plan was for us to have an accident so they could claim, as the car body had already been through the wars, we took pictures in case there was any problem on returning. The other thing we were given a full tank – (paid locally for that) and told to bring it back empty as no refund for any petrol in the car!re Excesses, there are many good roads on Crete, but there are some rough off roads hardly used with stones & holes, should you go on one of those type roads, take care & drive slowly. When it is obvious you damaged the tyres due to careless driving you may be held responsible.
All insurance included and excellent service….http://www.deltanet.gr/orca/.
No connection, just a regular customer. :)Once again try Kreta

We have used Autoclub in Kalives and Almyrida for several years and found them reliable, understanding and reasonable (usual disclaimer, no connection with them other than satisfied customer).
Many thanks for the prompt replies.
Has anyone had experience of Pangosmio/CarRentals.com? They offer a small automatic at a good rate and say any excess will be covered by CarRentals.com.
CarRentals.com are the booking agency. Most booking agencies offer to sell you an extra policy to cover any excess charges imposed by the local car rental firm.
CarRentals.com say they offer this free as part of their service (not tried them yet, so can’t say if they baulk at or are slow in paying).

How can an excess be covered by another company ???There are several companies who do this.
It saved us a lot of money a few years ago when we were on holiday in Crete, and had an accident.
Since then we always have an annual policy to cover car hire excess when we return to the UK – costs a fraction of the charges made by the car hire companies.
I doubt that many people realise that even when you pay for "collision damage waiver", there’s still an excess you have to pay (often up to £1000)
Barbary Coaster, many thanks for the link to Questor. I now have any excess insured.
