There are stories going about that Carforre are running down the shops and closing.
I was in there the other day ,and noticed the shelves were in a bit of a state , some were empty and the usual stink of rotting meat was more than pungent.
Daily Mail had a report out last year I think it was , that Carforre were pulling out of Greece altogether, anyone else heard anything ????
If it does close then hopefully it will be the end of all the mis-spellings

Convenience shops
End of Dec 2010 246, end of Dec 2011 170 Storesx5kmt

This could be a very good reason that Carrefour are unhappy in Greece.
Very dire news indeed, I don`t buy a lot of goods from there, the meat is rank and when we were there last Thursday the whole store stank of rottiing meat.
A lot of goods that were popular are now gone, and to price up Campbells soup tins at 2-71 a tin is outrageous.
My weekly shop there was about 60 euro`s, since a couple of years my weekly bill is now under 20 euro`s and less at times.

So are you saying that Carrefour prices have been lowered by 66% ?
No , what I am saying is I do not buy so much goods there now as I used to .
The items I did buy in the past are no longer available , or have gone up in prices, the only thing to do with stores or anywhere that is expensive is not bother shopping there.
Tavernas have put their prices up this year, understandable as the breweries and suppliers have upped the prices, but some have gone too greedy .
Taverna price increases are more probably due to the rise in VAT from 11% to 23%.

Ekathimerini today
Carrefour to sell Greek operations http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite2_1_15/06/2012_447184Latest stories going on here is …. Marks and Spencer are pulling out of Greece, Spar, Peacocks, Comet computer stores, Carrefour, and two other supermarkets I do not recognise.
If you take in the reports ,that Greece depend on imports of many items such as friut and veg, the dependancy is 75% according to Kathemerini news last year, the land here is vast and much produce can be grown and sold , but then you have the ` arible tax ` newly declaired, then it is not worth growing anything.
Tonight Kathemarini news reported that every tax payer in Greece will have to pay 1,500 euros more…. !!!!!

!
Binx, what is this ‘Arible Tax?
the only thing I had heard of was Arable subsidies that EU farmers used to get (not sure if they still do get a reduced one). From what you say sounds like everyone will now have to pay tax for growing food?Peebee

It’s a typo, should read `orrible tax`As I understand it, arable land has been, in recent times, exempt from all property taxes. That exemption has now been withdrawn.
I’m not sure which taxes will now apply, but sheep farming friends of ours in our local village are seething about the amendment. Speaking with them this week, they expect a significant new tax bill for their farmland.

The arible land tax was announced a few months ago, tax all food growers and farmers will have to pay, it was reported on Kathermarini news which I read daily.

I thought I read that Carrefour (did i spell it right?) was selling its Greek business to its Greek JV partner. I would guess that in these difficult times Greek supermarkets need to reposition their offer to lower price brackets in order to continue to attach customers and remain profitable. Maybe that does not fit with Carrefour’s business model.
I continue to be amazed that Greece cannot feed itself from its own output. I remember three years ago the owner of a large garden centre in Chania told me that much of the land had become uneconomic to farm because the farms were too small. He said that inheritance laws led to that and needed radical change. Becoming self sufficinet in food must surely be an important priority in Greece and very surely something that can be acheived. :)
Carrefore have sold their 50% stake in the business to their Greek JV partner Marinopoulos. The sale price was €1.
According to the professional shopper in our family this is a sad day because Carrefore’s own brand goods were of above average quality and relatively cheap when compared with the other local supermarket chains.

I for one will miss Carrefour discount items, the cartons of tomato puree are delicious, the frozen garden peas are excellent, such a shame it is going.
