I’ve always been a dog person but a little cat has adopted my family and we’ve been feeding it for about a month now.  I think it’s female and it’s about 2-3 months old by the look of it.

As I have a young grandson around and there is the possibility of more on the way, I want to protect against toxoplasmosis and other infections through scratches, bites etc.

I don’t want the cat to have endless kittens either as the area I live in is full of homeless cats scavenging in dustbins and they suffer during the winter months especially.  I suppose I should think about spaying and jabs but don’t think the cat is tame enough to handle yet safely. Any idea of cost for these measures?  Helpful advice would be appreciated.

        Thanks in advance

I doubt you’ll see any change out of 200 Euros. The sooner the better and you’ll probably need to borrow a trap.

You could try the Friends of Animals in Rethimnon-they will neuter a cat for a donation (which is up to yourself) They are doing vital work for all stray animals around the area.

Working locally in the Apokoronas area, we organise Trap/Neuter/Release programmes with dedicated volunteers. We loan traps, cages for nursing & transports across Europe, we treat & nurse cats/kittens when they are injured or sick.

We use humane reputable local Greek & volunteer vets who support our work with their veterinary skills, food & medicines. Please contact us via the link on our web site or send a PM from here, we can add your cat(s) to our list.

                    Christmas Appeal

Our Xmas appeal is for donations to fund travel costs in January 2014 sending SEVEN stranded cats & kittens to our colleague’s shelter in the UK for adoption. We have kind van drivers who take them across as & when they can but they cannot take them all.

When they came to us all the cats were sick & injured in some way, many had to be bottle fed & hand reared often they had undergone traumatic limb amputations like Harriet & Hebe or lost eyes like our darling kitten Erasmus who still manages to walk daintily along the fence top to reach  feathered friends, no catches so far!

Once healthy & healed our foster mothers take them into their homes for socialisation & have lovingly cared for them whilst we search for adopters. Having bonded with humans from such a young age none can go back to being village cats, they cannot fend for themselves & would in most cases die.

If they cannot travel we shall have no room for the influx of sick kittens/cats in the spring.
Each travel ticket costs £280 that does not include surgery/medicines, veterinary costs, passports & food.

Many thanks to the individuals & organisations who have supported our work this year we appreciate life is difficult, finances are stretched for all humans but these little souls have no one to help them other than us & you.

Thanks for the information.  Is there anywhere near Iraklion doing the same?

I don’t know how near to Heraklion you need, Jovana, but you could try contacting Vocal in Elounda – they will certainly know if there is anyone near you, if they can’t help themselves.

Jovana, whereabouts are you? I have a vet, near to Voutes, not far from Makro, who neuters female street cats for me for 50 euros. She works with Heraklion Dimos & sterilizes the street dogs for them & also is one of the vets that works at the Dimos shelter in Foinikia.

Message me if you would like her details.

Ros, thanks – that’s not far from me.  But Tipsy seems to have disappeared today so I’ll wait until she returns, and then contact you for details if we decide to go ahead.   :)

                                        Tipsy update

For those of you who were wondering what happened to Tipsy, she returned after a day or two and is now a permanent fixture on my balcony.  She weaves herself around my ankles and purrs so, needless to say I am still feeding her.   I haven’t decided to have her spayed yet, and that may be my undoing (or hers), ((or both)). Ros, thanks, but 50 euro is still a bit steep for me.

I know this sounds cold, but I would love to give her to someone who wants a cat.  Though she’s small and cute and fluffy and white with brown and tan splodges and blue/green eyes, she’s a cat and I don’t really want one!

Perhaps I should be honoured that she has adopted us and I’m trying to see it that way, and maybe one day I’ll succeed.  In the meantime, if anybody would like her, please contact me.

                                            About Tipsy.

She’s still around. I’ve tried really hard to want her to stay but am constantly aware of the toxo – worms – kitten possibilities and the costs involved in trying to prevent these. With a young child digging in the soil, there is a constant risk of infection and it is worrying me.

She’s now wearing a flea collar but my internet surfing tells me they’re next to useless so I haven’t helped much with that purchase I suppose.

Please, if there is anyone out there who will take her off my hands and off my balcony, I would love to hear from you. She’s tame enough to handle and lets me stroke and pet her, and as I described in a previous post, she is a very pretty, small-bodied cat.

I have sent you a PM there is nowhere for cats to go no shelters on Crete only volunteers & Animal Welfare Organisations overwhelmed with cats/kittens.

All  save their resources for the sick, injured & orphan kittens once you feed them & take them in they are yours!

                                                            Tipsy latest.
Just in case any of you are wondering about Tipsy and me, well here’s the latest bulletin. I got her spot on worm treatment, and flea/tic stuff too so she has been clean for a month or two. As far as getting her spayed is concerned, I left it and left it until a big ginger tom started serenading her at 4’o clock in the morning and decided with my husband to take her to a vet we know and have her operated on. That was yesterday, and I felt like a real traitor. She cried and fought and looked at me with utter disgust as I took her. We spent a lot of money, bought her a carrying cage in pretty pink, kept her in all night, warm and comfortable, and this morning I let her out to a fresh plate of chicken and a bowl of clean water. She stalked off without tasting either and with one glance back at me over her shoulder, she disappeared into the bushes.
It remains to be seen if she will trust me again and come back.
Just by way of contrast, a lady I know was also adopted by a female cat. She didn’t de-flea or de-worm it and fed it table scraps. The cat produced two kittens which an aggravated neighbour ‘disposed of’. The mother cat was irate for a day or two but didn’t leave home. And it didn’t cost her a cent.
I know! I know! You’re all shouting at me and shocked that I should compare the Cretan way with my chosen way. I wish I could ask the cats for their opinions. They would probably both spit in our faces!

Our recent arrival thrown over a wall left to die of dehydration & starvation; this little one we suspect now has brain damage possibly from the lack of food & fluids she may not make it.

We, our volunteers currently struggle to hand feed & accommodate 9 bottle feeding kittens, 2 abandoned litters discarded in building sites, bins & tossed over garden walls with various elderly/injured cats abandoned left to their fate.

We have to ask anyone of any nationality callous enough to leave kittens in bins & bags if local animal welfare organisations cannot accept them use your common sense & humanity:
                                                                TAKE THEM TO A VET.

Those who think the alleged ‘Greek way’ not neutering is acceptable study these pictures well.

Yes. Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply I think its acceptable, I was just upset at having to cope with yowling cat. It made me feel very doubtful about whether it was right to force her to be sterile. I know it makes sense, and that’s why we did it. Having said that, most people here I know wouldn’t allocate money to cat care – its very expensive, and there are more pressing needs these days.
I wonder what a vet would do with unwanted kittens? Do they contact charities like you or put them down? Do people know they can take their unwanted kittens to a vet, and do all vets accept them?
By the way, Tipsy ventured back to her plate at some point today and ate, but she did it when there was nobody around. She didn’t come to the door and rub against it purring as she usually does when she’s hungry. Oh well, its a start.

My queries regarding kittens and vets have been answered in a separate, new thread, and that’s ok. I get it.

For the record, Tipsy is fine, her wound clean, and her playful nature restored. That has helped me to relax in the knowledge that I won’t have unwanted kittens on my hands to deal with, and that the op was the right thing to do – for me and my family.

You may remember that having a cat was not something I chose, but something that happened. With the help of the advice I received from The Cat’s Pajamas, for which I am grateful, I think I now have a clean, healthy ‘safe’ cat and I wish the organisation continued success in a very uphill struggle.
