        [size=10]Cost of living 2013
Ok here we go again..  Goodness knows what the cost of living is anywhere these days as prices and taxes etc seem to change from one week to the next.
The following are the figures finalised for the middle of 2012 and contributed to by many, many people living mainly on Crete.
From my own recollecting of the many people that have contacted me over the 4 or 5 years of compiling this list, it would appear that most couples do well on a figure of somewhere between 11,000 and 18,000euros , but if you want all the toys, a car and a pool and a pet and insurance etc etc these things cost an additional amount so you select from the list of the items you will use and make up your own costs. I would also point out that a lot of the folks living on Crete have found the better and more economical ways to use their money .. i.e the right shops, local tradesmen, grow their own food etc, hence they make their money go further and have a nice lifestyle on less than the newcomer to the island would need to get by.
Also over the last 2 years a few people have contacted me and said they do very nicely on 8000 a year and others say the 30,000 is a bit light …it all depends on your own lifestyle where you live, and whether you already own your home, hence no mortgage/rental.
And contributions from the folks living on Crete/Greece would as usual be most appreciated, and I will update the list as your advice comes in.
Thanks in advance  for any practical comments.

I think you will enjoy NW coast, although it’s ******* windy here at the moment.
We have been familiar with the eastern end of Crete for over 30 years, but prefer it down this end, others may disagree.

I am sure we will love it Peebee. As for most people, the places you visit depend on where you can get flights to. We first started visiting Crete many years ago and flights from our home airport flew into heraklion and we quickly became familiar with and fell in love with Agios Nikolaos and surrounding area which we have now visited  ….jings must be about 16, 17, 18? times, we can now get flights with Ryanair into Chania, hence a visit to the west, booked a hotel near Agia Marina (Galini sea view) just looked nice on the net. Be there on Tuesday, got a car at the airport and taking the long way to the hotel to avoid driving through Chania which I have been advised to avoid with a car.

                                Brian,

Chania is far better to drive though than Heraklion, I guess it’s what you’re used to. You’ll need to go down to Souda and get onto the National Highway to bypass Chania, which is definitely the easiest way to get over to Agia Marina if coming from the airport.

I think after visiting the east so many times you will have a feel for the place and I am not sure you will get that same ‘feel’ in the west. I prefer the spectacular scenery of Agios, Elounda and the Sitia mountains and there seem to be more older villages here than the west. It was nice to see that end of the island and the drive from Agios to Chania is fantastic but it’s the east for me, but I live here so I am biased.

Jon, Thanks and google earth agrees with your directions ;D. and Bettyboo your right, we love the scenery in the east but it will be nice to visit the west to at least be able to draw a comparison plus Ryanair do flights a month earlier than Thompsons and Thomas cook, which are our only alternatives from Glasgow. We have driven to Manchester in the past, being desperate to get over there as often as possible but to be honest the 4 hour drive in each direction is a killer especially on the return leg if you havent managed a nap on the plane. ….just occured to me, now that we are both retired and can afford the time,it may be worth a hotel booking and fly from Manchester or even Birmingham

I would suggest that during your stay, you take a day out to drive around the Apokoronas region about 20km south east of Chania. You will discover some beautiful mountain scenery and sea views, pine forests and traditional Greek villages.
We used to think that the views around Ag. Nik. and Elounda (where we spent most of our holidays on Crete) were fabulous, but the views over Souda bay and across the olive groves to the White Mountains behind our house take some beating.
A trip up into the mountains to the start of the Samaria Gorge is also recommended, and if you want to do a walk that is not as taxing as Samaria, I would suggest trying the Imbros Gorge. Tip:- leave you car at the top as there are tavernas at the end who will supply a lift back to you car for around €20 a trip.

                                                DEPENDANT ON CAR SIZE

Brian, you might like to correct the spelling to DEPENDENT. (A "dependant" is someone who depends on you.) Also "response" has no "c". A spell checker will highlight all the other spelling mistakes in your posts.

(Gerald might like to delete this note, once the correction is done.)

BTW I agree with the phone + Internet bill. Ours is €408 p.a.

                                                    Brian,

If you get the chance, spend a day in Chania’s old town and marvel at the Venetian built harbour, the small alleys that wind back from the harbour front, the 500 year old buildings, the colours, the Roman ruins, the old town fortifications, the excellent eateries etc.  And definitely make a point to eat out in Portes just a stone’s throw back from the harbour.

Also, go to the old Roman settlement at Aptera, five or so miles up the Highway towards Rethymnon.  It’s high up and as well as having one of the best preserved Roman stone cisterns as well as an amphitheatre it has magnificent views over Souda Bay and the Aporkornas.  To see the views, go to the Turkish Fort and marvel at the unparalleled beauty and size of Souda Bay.

When we first came to Crete in 1988 we stayed in Ag Nic and whilst we still love that area Chania is the town to be close to!!

Thanks for the replies folks :) yup we fully intend to spend at least one day in the Apokoronas region, and probably a day out to the west. a couple of days we will dump the car at the hotel and use local transport to go into Chania which we have only ever seen on screen, it looks fantastic ..and apologies for my spelling, never was a strong point and it gets worse when I type at 2am. …was about to take your advice on spelling Martin but the "modify" button has vanished, only on the original post ??

As it has been 3 years to the beginning of June that I have been keeping records, I thought I would post a short update on our living costs.
                                                            Year 1 was €24,556
                                                            Year 2 was €24,933 (+1.5% on year 1)
                                                            Year 3 was €25,262 (+1.3% on year 2)
Total living costs for the 3 years = €74,751.
I admit that I haven’t been as meticulous over the last few months, so the figure for year 3 could be a few hundred higher.

All these figures include an annual rent of €7200
