Can anyone tell me what the lad is like from Chania to Elafonisi? We are planning on going there in June, but my husband doesn’t like driving on roads with steep drops at the side and no barriers! I have read various descriptions, all confusing and conflicting! Am I correct in thinking one of the routes is flatter and without drops at the side?
Go from Chania towards Kissamos, just before you get there take the road marked Elafonisi Old Road, follow this to Kefali, after this the route is well sign posted. It is a bit up-and-down and winding but basically a delightful drive with nothing to fear, and Elafonisi well worth the journey – early morning particularly. One note though, there was no ATM there ( or anywhere near ) so take enough cash for your visit.
Here’s a tip: he probably wouldn’t like to drive the gravel track over the mountain, past the aerial towers, from Paleohora to Elafonisi. I’ve done it twice in hire cars but, now that I own my vehicle, I won’t be doing it again!
P.s. it’s not the long drop down the mountainside that kills you – it’s stopping too quickly when you reach the bottom. ;)
