November 1, starts the month off on a Sunday that means we have a Friday the 13th…

It is also World Vegan Day (1st) leading to a month of Veganism…. Famous Brit Vegans include Leona Lewis, Paul McCatney, Joanna Lumley, Russell Brand, John Bishop. Other notables include: Jennifer Lopez, Jay-Z and Beyonce, and spiderman Tobey Maguire.

the 5th is  Guy Fawkes Night…… anyone going to stick a scarecrow on the bonfire …. excuse for yet another party in Greece for Brit expats?

Issue of the new €20 bank notes …. the week of the 20th…

Reminder: Whiskey Galore ….St Andrews Day (30th) – now there’s a celebration ahead for the Friday start to a long Scottish weekend, even here on Crete?????

All above and more covered in the Forum’s Events Calendar with dates up to three years ahead. All members can add a happening of interest to the expat community in Crete, rest of Greece etc. It is simple to do.
Check November’s calendar of events  here

And… it is just 54 days to Christmas!!!! Get shopping early and post off pressies back to family and friends in UK in first week in December to be sure they arrive in time. Not that Greece has heavy postal traffic just Britain before Christmas. Any experiences in past Christmas’ as to getting stuff back in time?

I run a mail order company in the UK and December deliveries are always uncertain. Royal Mail employs additional staff, which should be good news but often isn’t: some are thieves and some dump mail in the nearest bin if they want to get home early.

There are particular problems in cities with apartment blocks. If your recipient lives in an apartment block without a mail room, don’t even think about addressing it to the flat number. Get an alternative address at ground level, such as a local shop, and use that instead.

Get your parcels to England by December 10th. After that, pray. Even the couriers struggle because their drivers all want Christmas week off. In addition, they have to battle with the Christmas traffic and bad weather.

We do our Christmas shopping on Cyprus and send everything to the UK via the Royal Mail Post Office on Akrotiri RAF base. (We have access because one of our sons works on the base.) The mail gets flown directly to England twice a week, which is slightly* quicker than the Greek postal service manages, and significantly cheaper because we get the "local" UK postal rates.

            * I’m not being sarcastic. It is only slightly faster.

If you leave it too late, think about buying a gift voucher from Amazon or iTunes. (I love to receive these because I do buy a lot of "Kindle" eBooks, audiobooks and music.)

Thanks, Kefalas that was certainly very informative.

Thank god for this forum….. nobody has bothered to mention similar comments on Facebook — that I could find anyway!

What is happening to people? Here or other forums of late on Crete……

So many people want to take, not make the effort to share. They just want to take, take take take…. How very sad in this day and age. People only believe in financial gain. Is it because there is a great lack of spirituality in British people these days? I believe so. So many cheats, and grafters all around.

Do you know the joy of giving, yes simply giving. It is amazing. It does not have to be money to be given but just giving a helping hand.

Kefalas did just that. He did not have to. His advice was useful as another piece of input on the subject of getting Christmas mail to UK on time…..

To me, at my time of life, I see the Anglo-Saxon world as being just so selfish….. and I can remember the caring and sharing that took place right after WW2. (I was too young during the war).

I have to say that Kefalas might have employed thieves to post his mail for him. I have to defend sub contractors that Royal Mail employ over the Christmas period for the simple reason we have never had any problem with them dumping mail. I have lived in our 1st floor apartment for 10 years and sub contractors are given the key from royal mail to gain entry through our security system and every letter is posted through each letter box on 4 floors of the block, The keys are returned to Royal Mail office each day and issued to the next sub contractor the day after, ridiculous to say post to a ground floor apartment or a near by shop. If I was you Kefalas I would have a serious word with Royal Mail and tell them you believe they employ thieves, I’m sure they will take your words very seriously.
