"It’s bleakly ironic that German Chancellor Angela Merkel was greeted in Athens recently with swastika banners carried by angry Greeks protesting at what they see as German interference in their country.
Ironic because it is in Greece itself – amid terrible economic crisis – that we see the sudden rise of a political movement like the Golden Dawn that glories in its intolerance and desire to persecute minorities.
And it is led by a man who has claimed there were no gas chambers in Auschwitz. Can there be a bigger warning than that?"

Have only lived here since March and love our life here but have an absolute dread that Golden Dawn could well kill our wonderful life here and send us back to England. I have spoken to several Greek friends and they do not seem to see the danger to their way of life as well as ours.
I guess there are two ways of looking at this. We can either keep our heads down, remain quiet and hope it all goes away or, we can speak out.
The locals here are tired of immigrants paying no taxes, paying no fines when taken to court and, on the oft chance they do get chucked out, returning here next season with a new name and new papers.
Golden Dawn here in Chania and it’s environs are made up of youngish locals who pump gas, work in your local bakery, the taverna at the bottom of the road etc. In effect, they’re local vigilantes who, because the police and courts either won’t or can’t do their jobs, are taking it upon themselves to rid the local community of anyone – but mainly coloured or Asian people – who they deem do not belong here.
One can understand why these actions are gaining popularity with local businesses, the older generation etc, particularly if they believe the legal system has let them down.
Is it really any different from Germany in the late twenties and early thirties thirties when the Nazi party, not yet in power, began attacking businesses owned by the Jews, began forcibly beating up and removing gypsies from city centres etc.
We, the relatively affluent, white skinned, tax paying immigrants are quite safe – at least for the time being.

And don’t let scaremongering spoil it for you.
Yes I know all about what is going on, you seem to forget that we had all of this in the UK some years ago.
Ignore it or you will make yourself ill with worry, and others with you. Don’t want to get into a long drawn out debate on this or we will have another Mr Ricky week.I don’t think you can really compare the relaively affluent UK with the conditions in the Weimar Republic or present day Greece. ;)
History if ignored will come back and bite us all.
Tonight on Jeff Randall (Sky) his final comment was Greece has to find €5billion before this Friday or renege on it’s loans. If the Coalition falls as a result, it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ll have a Communist, a Fascist or a military government next!

JonAccording to todays news, the EU will not be giving the cash yet so the Greek government propose to sell more bonds to raise the money.
If Jon really wants to help Greece it is time to open his wallet/wall safe and buy some bonds!
I already own some – unfortunately!

Ps it’s my understanding the Greek Government ‘bought’ the €4 billion (they are still €1 billion light tonight) from their own Greek banks who used ECB money which, technically, is not supposed to happen i.e. they should not use ECB funds to repay sovereign debt. Smoke and mirrors and simply buying more time.
