Most people  fed up with being censored so have all departed to another site….

See how long this stays on..

with most forums it is usual for the same few posters to dominate discussions and to keep them going , once they lose interest or change to another forum then the momentum is changed ;)

It’s also that time of year when the garden needs work, all the wood needs varnishing, the house repairs need to be carried out etc.  it also depends on the topics being posted ie there’s not much you can comment on re table top sales, things for sale / wanted etc.

I’m guessing most folk flit between both sites and pass comments etc on topics that interest them.  For some reason the more ‘heavy weight’ discussions of late seem to have been on the  other site rather than BIC.

exactly, you could have just as easily had the "Thatch" discussion with Scooby on this forum but because you have decamped it was at the other site , this will all change again soon I am sure   :D

It’s not a matter of decamping, rather going where the discussion is. I probably don’t have to.mention that politics and economics are an area of interest. The fact that those willing to discuss these topics seem to favour the other site is perhaps something for others to ponder over.

maybe this is part of the problem, endless posts about the state of the euro , long cut and pastes, will we go back to the drachma ?etc.etc. has maybe deterred input.

this is of course vitally important but most people join the forum for info about Crete and how to make the best of their lives and holidays here.

even the yearly breakdown of costs kindly provided by Brian C did not create the usual response, just a correction to the cost of phone and internet connections.

most info can be found on the internet but the query about renewing IKA books in this area was well supported and I had no problems renewing mine because of that.

however I have noticed that many posts recently are technical , internet, loss of Sky signals etc., can I use a UK phone? etc., these need specialist replies and so do not generate a high response.

As you say Jon ,maybe we are all just getting along with the day to day living here  ;)

If you look at the Top 15 posters in the members list you will find that many of the prolific posters seem to have deserted.

Binx has not posted since last July, Lee & Lou since Feb 2012, Limnes not since last Dec, Ken’s last post was in Feb as was Eleni13’s. As they left, this Top 15 no longer includes the most prolific posters like Warwick, Filippos, RIC etc who all left for pastures new.

I personally have watched with dismay the decline and eventual disappearance of Explore Crete, a great site for tourists and residents alike.

Perhaps the newer members just join for information rather than to contribute or can find little to interest them.

                                                    Christine,

For most folk the relationship between Sterling and the Euro and whether we might return to the Drachma directly impacts their lives here ie both now and in the future.  And for those who earn their living here the constant change in laws, rules, taxes, regulations etc. is equally important.

One of the things that most affects house owners here is whether or not to legalise their properties.  If anyone had done this a year ago they might now be feeling a little aggrieved because it seems the rules regarding legalisation have again been changed.  For example, our tiled pergola and BBQ would have been deemed illegal last year but now it seems we may not have to pay for them should we legalise our property.

I agree that this and the other forum should be a helpful repository of information but should it not also allow those who want to discuss geranium pruning to sit alongside those who want to discuss the political and economic decline of the country we’ve all chosen to live in?

Jon, yes all this goes without saying, it is a given. ;)

however it is usually the same few people who discuss certain topics, whether here or in "pastures new" .

As most of these people have entrenched positions on certain subjects then all the discussions usually end in a stalemate,  or endlessly going over the same old ground.

As I type this  here in my village there has just been a motor cavalcade of local men dragging trees for tonight’s bonfire at the church, accompanied by car horns and huge firework explosions . :D

the excitement and traditions all this week here have as usual been fantastic.
Tonight at the Church and tomorrow’s feasting will be the culmination of an exciting week.
perhaps we should write more about what it is actually like to live here rather than speculating about things that may or may not happen

ps. I understand that now for relatively small unauthorised changes to your property, eg. pergolas, there will be a fine of 500 euros when you sell or transfer the property, this is great as if I ever do this then it will be cheaper than the option of removing them or a much larger fine, however this could all change again in the future who knows? 8-)

Jon, I legalised last year and nothing has changed as to date.
If you have a pergola tiled or not and it is not on your BUILDING PERMIT you will be fined.. ANYTHING not on your building permit you will pay a fine on, this includes any windows that are not in the correct position, any glass windows fitted to any arches on your building, even a flat part on your roof which shows a full pitch on your building permit, I paid a fine on this as our builder changed the pitch and did not add the changes to our permit.
As I understand it You have to be legal or you can’t sell.
If you have not paid the 500 euros to start your legalisation with your engineer then it will cost you more when you come to sell, I believe all fines were based on 20% if you joined the system last year, If you are not in the system now then your fines could be a lot more.
We were all given the rules set out to legalise, it’s up to each individual to take it or leave it.
                                                            Enjoy your Easter weekend.

                                                                Del,

I started the legalisation process but my engineer advised me to hold off paying whilst each quarter they kept on extending the deadline.

The most recent info I’ve read – on the other site – states that:

"Homes with ‘minor infringements’ built legally before 2011. This category will include barbecues (!) pergolas, enclosed balconies, perimeter walls (!), internal alterations(?) and other minor issues regarding additions or alterations to properties in cases where a building permit has been obtained. There will be no deadline for regularising properties in this category and no new building plans will be needed. All minor infringements together can be “legalized” with a one off payment of 500 euros, payable at the time of the transfer of the property. It is not clear if a certificate of legality will also be required."

As with everything here, it’s hard to know what is true, what is half true and what is blatantly untrue.

Hopefully my engineer is on top of the situation.  I’m hopeful she will be because she’s the sister of the guy who oversaw the original house build.  But then again, this is Geece and you never really know what’s happening and even when you do it seems there’s never any uniformity in how the system works.

I can’t get excited about kids throwing bangers around, sounding car horns and then stuffing themselves silly because they’ve been starving themselves for 40 days all in the name of?…………what. And we don’t need the complexities and misery of all that most "religions" bring and we certainly didn’t need those bloody bangers!
