Hello Everyone, We are moving to Crete mid January 2013. I have already found this forum very useful and I am looking forward to making some new friends out there. I have loads of (probably silly) questions….!! I hope when we get there it wont take to long to get a phone line and internet. We have bought a house in Kokkino Chorio….we’re soooo excited to be moving we are counting the days already and we haven’t even got a moving date yet…! Maybe its all the shopping I am going to have to do to kit the house out when we get there…! Does anyone have a little 4X4 for sale?

Phone lines and quickly usually don’t go together so probably best to start making enquiries now? There are mobile and satellite alternatives as well.
Also if you are going to do a lot of ‘kitting out’ in the house do some price checks as it may end up cheaper buying in the UK and getting someone like Nomad to ship them over.
3 years ago we were in the same position and just as excited. Happy to say we were right to be and still love it.
I’m sorry to say you will be forced to visit tavernas as a friendly owner is one of the great sources of information  ;D

Most of the big phone companies, Wind, Cosmote, Vodafone etc are offering packages now for phone line/mobile and internet. You will need to produce your passport and obtain a tax code AFM number before they will enter into a contract with you. AFM can be obtained there and then in Heraklion. Mobile SIM phones and a dongle internet can be obtained same day usually so can at least tie you over until a land line is fixed. Satellite packages also available. Chat to your locals when you arrive to see in your area who provides best signal as they do vary.

A lot of areas are still without phone lines and poles.
You can go to the vodafone shop in Kalives and take out a contract with them.
You can get a mobile phone free with a Sim card that is used as a house number.. 282..This will give you 300 minutes of calls to UK land lines, and half hour to Greek phones. The cost is 10 euros a month, small tax added..Then you can get a dongle to go with your phone at a cost of 13 euros a month, it’s no good for downloading but good enough for emails talking on facebook and if used about 1 hour per day should last you a month, you can also buy time. My bills run out about 28 euros a month which I pay online. Most bars have Wi-Fi so you can use a laptop free of charge.

My Cosmote dongle costs me 27 per month with 3 Gb free download. More than an hour I can assure you per day!!
I even use it to watch free UK TV now and then.

Also if you are with Sky in the UK you can take your box with you and have a dish fitted. You can’t get ITV or BBC but quite a lot of others, still get sky sports 1 2 3 but not 4.

Mele, the 28 euros is for both the phone bill and the dongle bill, but I only have 1Gb with the dongle. I was giving them the lowest contract that they can take out. I’m not sure what Vodaphone charge for 3Gb, I’m not in Crete all year round so I just have the small package. I can’t cancel the dongle because I’m on contract but the phone can be held on an open line at a lower rate, it’s not worth filling in all the paper work so I just keep it, So you could say I’m paying 56 euros a month for my phone and dongle, The price you pay for living in two places.

Ah yes and one day they might bring their prices in line with UK competition. The TV is non stop adverts for the phone companies, so they obviously make plenty of money!!
