Last Saturday my mare was badly kicked and had to be put down-though this was not possible till Sunday, I have known her since she was 1 and that was 14 years ago. Don’t know how to cope with her loss. Is there anyone who can suggest something that might help…

            Hello Robins

I am sorry for your loss.

I don’t know how you must be feeling as I have never been close to having a friend in a horse. But I am sensitive and sympathetic enough to understand your plight.

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened."
            –Anatole France

That quote was taken from a wonderful page by a Debora Johnson who faced a similar circumstance to yourself. Ms Johnson lays out a touching yet in a very way practical way a set of emotions suffered in the grieving period and how she handled them.

            Her recollections end:

" ……For those individuals who have never experienced this special bond with an animal, they may not be able to understand. It is something that cannot really be explained, only felt–deeply."

Ms Johnson signs off her page with:

"You can’t see anything properly while your eyes are blurred with tears."
            –C.S. Lewis

I hope that helps at this difficult time.

According to spiritualist beliefs, we are all immortal souls inhabiting physical bodies as a learning experience. Of course that includes animals.
