Just moved to Crete and moving into an unfurnished house. We need absolutely everything and need to go to a large hypermarket that sells furniture and household goods/white goods. We’re based in Vamos so need to find a suitable shop nearby. Does anybody have any suggestions as to the best place to shop please?

Oh boy, are you in for a rude awakening :-)

The closest reasonably sized shops to Vamos are in Chania but there is no such thing as a hypermarket.  Chania has two or three large white goods / electrical stores close to Hallidon and 1866 Square but be prepared for a shock ie they are not cheap.

As for furniture it will depend on your budget.  Stock Bazaar on the road to Omolos (before the National Road junction) has a range of reasonably priced furniture and there is also a closer shop to you in Kalyves run by a British couple with a pretty good selection.  There are two bigger furniture stores off the National Highway but again you won’t find many bargains if on a tight budget.

There is also a new Ikea outlet in Chania but it’s more like Argos in the UK ie check the catalogue, order then wait for it to be delivered.

Best advice is to keep an eye on the ex pat sites and look at what those returning to the UK etc are selling.

We bought our sofas from CFS in Kalyves, our beds came from the traditional Cretan furniture shop also in Kalyves on the left hand side as you go towards the main road (motorway) junction.
We bought the flat sided single wooden beds which we put together to make a 6ft wide one – essential in the winter with lots of cats sharing the duvet. I think they were around €180 each including mattress, we did the same for the guest bedroom so we can have 1 large or 2 singles.
There is another shop by the Souda exit from the main road called Simple City, it’s a sort of Habitat / IKEA style, with quite a good selection of stuff.
Our fridge freezer, washing machine and dishwasher all came from the large Carrefour opposite Lidl, just down from the Mournies (Hospital) exit – they delivered the same day.
If you want pots, pans, glasses, cutlery and many other household items, it is definately worth having a look around Jumbo on the main road out of Chania towards Kissamos.

Try the new ikea store on the Souda road.
