        Hi,

We are looking to move to Crete in around 12 months time and have been told that bringing a UK registerd car over is a lot of hassle and is costly. I have received info from Greek Embassy in London that appears to contradict previous comments insofar as it makes the process seem straightforward and inexpensive. Has anyone on the site any experience of this that they can share?

        Thanks

Thanks for taking time to respond. Unfortunately the thread cannot be accessed. Not sure why, perhaps age? Once again though thanks.

sorry paul.. it’s probably me who is computer illiterate, anyway, there’s a thread on page 7 of the board topics and probably more further back in time.. reading what info is available here on BIC i think i’ll be buying one in crete when i finally move there. sounds like a nightmare to import.

I thought the same as you but if you look at one of the comments on the page in question it does say that by going through Greek Embassy in London the cost is negligible. Based on the info I have received from the Embassy that looks to be the case so I am going to look into this in more detail.

You will find that all the information from the embassy is fully in accordance with EU Law.

When you get here with your car they ignore the EU law!!

This certainly was the case a couple of years ago but am not certain if this is still happens.

Thanks Fred, to be honest this is my concern. I dont want to go through the process in the UK only to find that I am back to square one in Crete. This was the main reason for posting on the forum to see if anyone has recent experience.

I have mentioned it before, but a few weeks ago I saw a guy getting into a car with red "import" number plates and asked him if it had cost him a fortune – apparently he had the paperwork sent to the Embassy (did not even visit it himself) and only had to pay a few hundred euros in Crete for number plates.

BC Thanks. It was your post from some months ago that prompted me and colandjohn quite rightly reminded me of this earlier today. I know Crete is a law unto itself but maybe it is time to try and deal with this. There are all manner of euro registered cars driving around the UK and at least I am trying to go through the right channels by speaking to Greek Embassy. I suspect though that there are still some horror stories out there!

                                        Cheers

                                            Paul,

I phoned the Greek Embassy in London and also the consular office in Glasgow and latterly went in person to the Greek Embassy in London – it’s off Holland Park Road. Each time the guy who specifically dealt with importing cars to Greece was on holiday, on days off, at a funeral etc.

It can be done but you need the patience of a saint and, as Fred says, there is absolutely no guarantee that the Port Police across here (immigration) will make things easy for you.

From memory you will need to prove you’ve owned the car for six months, show the Greek Embassy proof of residence in the UK i.e. P60 for the previous two or three years, council tax bills, utility bills etc. Once you get your form stamped you should – theoretically – be able to drive south and for around €500 + a local MOT get your Greek plates.

One word of warning though: make one mistake re the paperwork and you’ll pay for it once you get to Crete.

Thanks Jon, all your points tie in with info I have received from Greek Embassy. I can’t quite shake the feeling that no matter how much effort I put into getting all the neccesary paperwork that something will go wrong once I actually get to Crete. Somehow it does not seem right though that cars of every nationality under the sun can be seen on UK roads and yet the obstacles that are put in the way of someone legitimately trying to take a vehicle from one EU member state to another are allowed when it comes to Crete.

Couldn’t agree more with the sentiment above. And just to scare you a little more, I went to the Port Police here in Chania and asked what it would cost if I brought in a British registered car worth €20,000. The woman dealing with my query asked for the engine size, the car’s age and then consulted with a well worn jotter. Fortunately I was holding onto her desk when she told me the import tax would be €65,000. Needless to say I did not bring or register the car in question.

We made the mistake of bringing our car with us. After 40+ calls to the Greek Embassy [witha 95%+ failure rate] we drove back and sold the car in the UK and then bought here.
Though not major there are different specs for cars for the S European market [A/C etc] and the joys of not dealing with trying to register a UK car make it – IMHO – make buying here the prefered option unless you have a cherished vehicle.

Interestingly enough, there seems to be a new rumour going around recently that the greek customs are no longer going to impose these high charges ie they are following the eu law. But…as I said its just a rumour!!

My immediate reaction, when I heard first, was as Greece had copped a fair few billion out of the EU then maybe they have to start behaving and following the rules abit. It would seem somewhat silly for the EU to continue to try to fine Greece for their illegal stand on car import duty…..

I think I’ll watch the site with interest for the next few months before making a final decision. As ever it is easy from a distance to say what should and should not happen but you guys are in Crete and you know what actually happens.

I have experience of importing a car in November 2009. The problem people have is that they try to start the process on arrival not possible.
You need to provide proof of ownership of the car and that the VAT has been paid, (the receipt or Invoice).
Proof that you have lived in the U.K. for three years( council tax bills)
                                                                            Three years of P60’s.
                                                                            Two different utility bills.
WE took this to the Greek consul and paid a £20 fee.
On arrival in Crete we contacted customs at Suda who put us in touch with an agent (Erica) who for 400E. did all the paper work. This is then sent to Athens by the agent and a week latter our car was allowed in with no duty. To get number plates we had to pay 70E to transfer ownership to ourselves in Crete. Then get the car M.O.T.d in Crete.
THen pay the years road tax (tax can only be paid from Jan to Dec no part years in Crete).
Then you Que at the Transport Office and Que some more then they photo copy all the document and issue the red plates.
I would advise Ring the consul. and ask what he wants in documents as it constantly changes.
The process is Greece which means plenty of nit picking and rubber stamping but it is easy to get through if you accept this and follow their rules
