thought that passes through my head, for you to contact all the tour and charter flight companies in Ireland that go to Crete. With your medical experience it may be of interest to them. If they have no vacancy now, one never knows what might happen, so let them have your contact details now & keep them updated after your move.

                    Lizsnap,

I think that you need to be realistic and accept that the chances of finding a job are near zero at the moment.

Firstly, Greek families tend to adopt their elderly relatives and take responsibility for looking after them. They also have little money for paid help.

Secondly, with unemployment running at over 20% and over 50% in the under 25’s you will be well down the list after relatives, friends, and friends of friends. Unless you are fluent in Greek your chances are even lower.

You may think that you could work in a hospital but you need to check that your qualifications are valid here as many are not. Hospitals have no money for drugs let alone pay their staff. A nurse friend of mine has just been laid off after not being paid for 5 months. Are you prepared to work for nothing?

Sorry to be so negative but, in the current climate, you would be crazy to leave a job in the UK to move here. If you need to work to survive just forget it!

                        Herby

Very much agree with your comments particularly your final paragragh.

I have heard of some Greeks taking on extra staff in the short-term, though they are not needed, because they have been asked to do so as a favour by relatives & is causing them extra financial stress.

There now high unemployment in all European countries. Anyone who has a job, should seriously think a 1000 times & more before quitting.

I absolutely agree Herby, as a qualified nurse I took the decision not to even try after all of the things I’d heard about staff not being paid etc.
Liz I should save up and come out and live in Crete first to see if it’s what you really want. Life is very difficult if you have to work and earn to survive and a six month stay over the winter would be a good taster into life and whether it’s for you. That way you are not committed to anything and Ireland would be there for you to go back to and all of the things that you don’t/can’t get in Crete.
It sounds so negative all of the comments you are getting but I’m sure you would rather hear the truth than for people to brush over how hard things are.
That said, if you can afford to live in Crete and not have to work go for it! :) Wonderful people, wonderful island :)
I hope things work out for you
                            Carol
