Hi All, we are new here, and we have a question regarding importing a car. We looked already under driving in Crete, but are still a bit confused. Here it goes.
We live for 5 years on a Greek Island, our car is a 30 years old Ford, and needs to be replaced. We would like to go to Germany and buy another second hand car to bring to the Island. Is there a possibility to do this ? What are the rules/prices to change the license from German to Greek ?
Any tips or help, or eventual links to websites would be great !
        Thanks.

In a nutshell your best bet is to go to Germany and sell your car, come back to Greece with the money and buy a car in Greece, trust me, it’s the easiest way :-)

Geoff, thanks. But still I would like to know what it will cost me. In Greece I can not find a reasonable car below 4000 euros, in Germany I can find a good second hand one for 1000 Euros. Let’s say I pay 1000 Euros paperwork, this still is a difference of 2000 euros ?
Didn’t anybody do this already ?

One problem you might face is that the customs man does not care that you only paid 1,000 Euro for the car. He might decide its "value” is 2000 Euro on which he is going to charge you 80 % tax plus administrative fees. I’m not saying it will happen but it can.

Kilikis, thanks. I know that there is still a lot of bureaucracy and even cor…on in Greece sometimes, but there must be rules ???? Where can I find these ?

                                Hi,

I would also like to know more about the percentages and how it is being calculated concerning the importation of a vehicle from an onther EU-country.

Thanks in advance for any information,
                                Erik
