I was given a tour this morning of the new dam they’re building outside Chania to capture the winter rains etc.  It’s a major project and although in some doubt a few years back should be completed in the next 12 to 18 months.

Suffice to say it’s an impressive structure and all the engineering etc. is being carried out by local personnel.

        Jon

ps when completed it will hold 700 million cubic litres of water.

                Gem,

You drive out of Chania and take the Omolos road past the prison and on out for seven or eight miles.  I don’t know the name of the road we turned right onto to get to the dam but can probably find out.  It’s a thirty minute drive from the centre of Chania, so not that far.

After visiting the dam the project manager (Takis) took us to his snail farm a few minutes away – although he prefers if we call them escargots – which wasn’t quite as awe inspiring but still interesting.

I should perhaps mention that I’ve known Takis for eight or nine years and last night after an excellent meze and copious amounts of Raki he asked if we’d like to come past and take a look at his ‘baby’.

                Jon

ps if going to take a look a 4 x 4 would be advisable!!

Is that 700m litres or 700m cu/m (not that I can visualise either)

He said litres but perhaps meant metres. It’s an ideal site for capturing water and certainly is an impressive build.

Below is a picture from the top of the dam and the area which will be under water in two years time. In the foreground is the concrete mixing units i.e. all the concrete was mixed on site.

If it is, I think they deserve this one unlike all the useless roadworks! Thanks Jon for the info. I would like to try and find it sometime.

Will they ever fill up ? One would hope someone has done there homework and this is not lip service to the need to conserve water supplies and to keep people in work ?
But, do we really have enough rain for this to be viable ? I would love to see a nice expanse of water on a generally dry island but I have my doubts, they have of course got to finish them first.
We have in our area a water channel that comes down from high ground and in the five years we have been here it has actually had water flowing do[ch373]n it 4 times and for 24hrs.
I assume the ground forming the reservoir will have to become completely water logged so as not to lose the water through natural wastage as do all our cess pits we never have to empty because they have not and could not realisically fit a membrane. now those of us with pools, when the sun comes out how often do we have to fill them with copious amounts of water to counter the evaporation? We have about a month of rainfall in five ‘ winter ‘ months but seven months of sun ?
I would really love to be proved wrong because the amount of money they have spent laying a large water supply pipe from the reservoir over here for 20klms with its numerous access roads and pumping starions is frightening and has probably cost a much as the dam itself and are losing two villages so I am told.
If I wore a hat I’d offer to eat it but I don’t but I will happily post a very sincere apology to all those involved if it works.

                                            Steve,

At it’s height the number of people working full time on the dam was 60.  There are now 30 working full time to complete the project.

Crete apparently has the same average rainfall as England, all be it the rain usually falls from now until April.  Higher up in the mountains the rainfall can be double the UK’s average in some places.

Only time will tell if the dam has been positioned in the right place.

                                            Jon

I noticed that in the first 3 months last year, there was more rain in Aporkoronas than in some places in western England in a year. There’s also snowmelt here as well, which gradually tops things up most years. i’m really pleased that they are not letting all that rain just flow into the sea!

thanks for the great photos, topdriller, a couple of months ago we went up to Omalos and on to Sougia and on the way stopped for a snack at the beautifully sited Kephali taverna below Omalos. From there I thought it must be a new dam in the distance and I’m pleased to see it is, anything that helps secure a reliable water supply gets my vote.
It’s funny, a couple of years ago we went to see the Potamos Dam in the Amari Valley as it first filled and we all said Rethymno’s got a dam – Hania will want one too. Last month the Amari Valley dam was only a few feet down from it’s overspill level after a long hot summer so I think there’s hope for the Hania one. It’s another visitor attraction too.
