Cafe and bar owners who fail to comply with the smoking ban that went into effect on September 1 face fines of up to 10,000 euros as of yesterday after the one-month transition period they had been granted expired.

Anyone owning an establishment that does not comply with the ban on smoking in enclosed spaces will be handed an initial fine of 500 euros that will then rise to 10,000 euros and could lead to them losing their license if they repeat the offense.

Customers who ignore the ban will be fined between 50 and 100 euros.

Restaurateurs and bar owners fear that the imposition of the ban, which was not heavily enforced during its first month, will damage their business. “This will be a total catastrophe for us,” said Dimitris Arvanitis, who heads a committee of cafe-bar and restaurant owners opposing the law. “The downturn in business at our stores will be dramatic.”

Municipal police will lead the effort to ensure the law is being adhered to but Kathimerini understands that some local authorities have not yet received the booklets that officers are supposed to use to issue fines. There is also doubt about how strictly municipalities will want to apply the law, given that local elections are due in just over a month. “It seems like a Herculean task [to impose the law] in a country where half its citizens smoke but we will get there,” said the Public Health General Secretary Antonis Dimopoulos.

Despite the difficulties in enforcing the law, it seems that since it was passed there has been a substantial rise in the number of people thinking about quitting smoking. The 1142 helpline, which began operating on September 1, has received some 120,000 calls. Only 1,300 of those were calls to report people breaking the law.

They had the fines in place the last times they tried…and nothing. I think it will happen sometime but when? who knows. When do you ever see the Municipal police outside of the major towns? me? never. It will of course take affect firstly in the major towns and tourist areas but in the villages? can’t see it. just my opinion.

I returned from Crete yesterday. Smoking ban, what smoking ban????
Yes, I know it supposedly came into force on 1st September, I was there on 1st September. I did see a few more places with no smoking signs this time, but hey, the waiters, barmen etc were still smoking along with the customers!!!
I even went to one of the big Centres where weddings etc are held, I was told you can’t smoke in here anymore, guess what, oh yes you could!!! the waiters even provided you with ashtrays.

It is a quiet rebellious attitude.

The head waiter of one well known eatery in central AgNik saw our group of 8 entering the restaurant. As we motioned towards a long table already with place settings, he smiled, didn’t say a word, pointed to the no smoking sign on the wall beside the table and signaled us to the other side of the room where there was no, no smoking sign. And from where the original sign could not be spotted – a hanging flower arrangement was in the line of sight….

It turned out that the waiter observed one of our ladies in the party snuffing out her ciggie as we entered the restaurant.

On finishing the meal, the same lady asked the waiter if she could smoke. An ashtray was delivered with a smile and the comment: "we are Crete not Athens!"

I was in a eating at a place and some of the customers started to light up,not very nice,no respect. I left giving a friend of mine a hand to leave,  as she had a bad stroke due to smoking for many years and cannot walk properly, but the smokers didnt think that this is what it can do. still I hope that we can stand if it doesnt work

The Cretians and Greeks in general flaunt loads of the laws rules etc that are imposed on them and that adds to the culture/attitude we love about the place. The various heath and safety, human rights etc that are being imposed on us over the last 20 years have become a rediculous joke and just been taken to far, but, I am with Stalos …50 to 1 that the no smoking ban in public buildings will stand ….given time.

                                            Hi Brian c
think Stalos is offering those odds against the ban working, though I could be wrong ;)
we go out a lot and have found that most places have enforced the ban , the real test will come in the winter when the smokers can no longer sit outside in comfort .
this is an interesting article about peoples perceived views of Health and Safety laws

There was an interesting "conversation" in our local Kafenion the other day when a couple of men lit up inside and the owners young daughter took them to task in no uncertain terms!! –

Why did you frequent the places before the ban if that concerned about your health?

Before the ban came in did you use tavernas where people smoked? probably yes, so where is the difference with before and now? I do agree that there should be areas for smokers or non smokers or they should have an extraction system, and no I don’t mean a little plastic things in the wall, I mean a proper built in the ceiling, costs a fortune and can clear a room of all smoke in five minutes system!
I feel like this not because I’m a smoker, but because socialising is such a part of life here. We have seen what it has done to the UK, so why on earth would we want to do that here. I am not talking about money I am talking about anti social behaviour. Kafenions etc are a very big part of the culture here, fags and all!
I don’t understand why foreigners only want the bits of the Greek culture that suit them when it suits them.

I don’t usually post on the Forum, but I’m afraid I feel I have to here. We don’t live in Crete, but we love Greece and the Greek people dearly, own an apartment in Agios Nikolaos and we visit about 5 times a year.

Surely this isn’t about national culture? Anyone who thinks it is is fooling themselves and, I’m sorry to say, is probably a smoker using that to justify their habit. It’s about promoting good health and a recognition and respect that others may not wish to be affected by the smell and atmosphere that smoke in an enclosed environment causes. Note I say enclosed. I have no problem if others wish to smoke somewhere which doesn’t impact upon me (such as in their homes), but I do object when I cannot go out to a pub or bar without coming back with a dry throat and my clothes and hair stinking, because of the smoke. We know that when we have visited Crete in the past we will be near smokers in a bar but because we are usually outside, it doesn’t have the same effect.

As far as I am concerned, the impact of the smoking ban in the UK has been positive – places are cleaner and more pleasant to be in and those premises that wish to stay in business have made an effort to provide heated outdoor spaces for smokers. Perhaps the Cretans could do the same?

The great British disease may be heart failure, but I bet in Greece it’s lung cancer and I would dearly love to know how much money treating that costs the hard pressed Greek health service each year. Anything which reduces that and which means people live longer healthier lives has to be good.

Come on guys, how hard is it to do without a fag for an hour or two inside a cafe? And even in the winter there it is often mild enough to sit outside. And if you can’t go for more than an hour without your fix, you seriously need to cut down! I really hope the new law is successful.
