Hi all, Went to the Embassy in London yesterday to try and get papers sorted ahead of bringing my car with me in October. I was told that the car needed a cert of EU conformity which I knew. However I had been informed by the manufacturers that since it was built before 1995 this didnt apply. I was told by the Embassy person that she didnt think therefore that I would be able to register such an old car. Is she right?

Sorry to be a kill-joy but why are you going through the hassle of bringing a UK registered car?? So many people (myself included) have had cars confiscated and paid huge fines if they are here for a long period. It always appears that the embassy in UK and the authorities here do not agree on the rules.

My advice would be to bring your UK car here loaded with you belongings (if that is the reason you are bringing it) and then sell it on to someone who is returning to the UK / drive it back and then fly here……… or…….. sell your car there and buy a Greek registered one when you get here.

there is a  informative page on this website importing a classic car , please note the answer 2.
I wrote this answer a few years ago and it refers to the cert. of conformity
                http://www.britsincrete.net/about-crete/the-law/330-classic-mgb-car-crete

if you read this page from the website eurococ you will see that the certificate was introduced in the early nineties so you should be able to get a certificate, good luck

So they let you through the turnstyle at the London Embassy, Congratulations.

In person and by phone the Embassy has given us false information in the past, though have not enquired on this subject.

Thanks for the helpful replies but is their anyone out there who has overcome the fact that older, Classic cars do not have a certificate of conformity? I cant believe no-one has ever succeeded in getting a classic car over.

Personally I don’t think the Greek authorities will care what class of car it is. They will treat it the same as ‘any old car’ and not respect the ‘collectors’ aspect of this. If you intend to drive it about whilst here then you need a lot of paperwork which may not be recognised by the average bobby on the beat so you could get problems. If you are bringing it in a container and only intend to garage it to retain its’ value then that is a different story. Good luck………….

Our Greek neighbours have just registered a large 20 year old vehicle previously registered in Germany.

Because it has just been registered here in 2011, the Greek authorities treat it as a 2011 model and tax it at that value i.e. as if its value is €25,000 and not its true value of about €1000.

So thats another downside to importing an old vehicle – even the Greeks could not get round that.

The problem as ever here is there is no consistency it depends on the office you go to. We bought a red plated car from friends which had been imported through Rethymno and were told thy needed to take it there. When they got there blank looks. Ar Ierapetra police station we achieved nothing a friend took us to Agios Nikolaos, officer hands over form to sign, we ask what the form was for, the reply never mind just sign it and you get the car.
Good luck, but maybe you will regret it.

Whilst this question is slightly off track, does anyone know the position for exporting a UK car within six months and returning with another UK car for a further period? We currently own two cars in the UK and intend driving back in October. We would like to be able to return in late March/April and cannot decide whether to sell both cars whilst we are back in the UK.

Apparently they bought it on the understanding that the previous german owner did the work to get Greek plates.

He told them that it cost €50 and was not too difficult – however the poor guy is dead now so we can not ask how he achieved that.

As you say people enquiring on the mainland have different answers as will be the case here. Saying to customs/ police etc that somebody said…does not wash.

Good luck but be sure because you could end up in limbo land.
