We have orderd some items from Amazone. Can anyone tell us how we will know if they have arrived. They will probably not fit in our post box. So would we have to go to our Post Office in Ag. Nik to collect them and how will we know if they are there. :-/

they will leave a collection notice in your postbox .
small parcels are often delivered but larger ones have to be collected.
go straight to the collection point which is at the back of the office do not collect a ticket and wait in the queue.
if delivery is by a courier service then they will ring to tell you the parcel has arrived

Some time ago our Greek neighbours told us that most Greeks use the local Taverna or shop as their delivery address for larger items.
This does away with the need to travel into town to collect from the Post Office, or the extremely frustrating business of trying to get a courier company to come to your village and meet you.

Since then we have used our butchers address and things from Greek Post or couriers have always been delivered first time.

Initially we always asked at the butchers beforehand, but after 2 or 3 times we were told "don’t even ask" !!

Try putting your Greek mobile number as the first line of the address. Our PO phones when the parcel arrives!

Every village has a Kafeneon, all post goes to there.

I know its late at night but what on earth are you on about??

Post with names and mailbox numbers goes into those blue things with post box numbers on…..mail boxes…. whats left goes to the local shop etc.

                                Hi barbary_coaster,
Where Binx is, that is what happens to the regular post.
I used to live in a village near there, that post was delivered to local shop.
He would deliver to the post boxes as the mood took him.
He was always very good when he had the Electric bills to deliver – tee-hee.
He made commission if you paid it at his shop.
One could pick up post at his shop.
I recall it was moved from one shop to another, then eventually to a Kafeneon /Kafe.

We also have blue post boxes Latsida – however PENGUIN was asking about Amazon parcels, which are almost always in very large boxes no matter what size the contents are.
Therefore the postman or courier can not deliver them, so the local shop/kafenion is the best option.

I have found with some parcels that if the postman can get it in the post box with the front open he does – without a thought of the recipient getting it out of the small post box door! I often wonder what people think as they’re passing when I’m swearing at the post box trying to undo a parcel inside it to retrieve the contents! ;D

our postman leaves the parcel on the doorstep

yes BC but in this area they do not leave parcels in the kafeneio ,,there is no need, which was my point. :D

Done that LJF >:( I had my knife with me and had to slit the parcel open and take out some of the packaging before I could remove it.
Seems to depend on our postmans mood. Sometimes a collection notice and sometimes in the Inka opposite. Two years ago I was shocked – now it seems quite normal for high value parcels to be stacked on the freezer cabinet where you could take your pick :D

I think you’ve missed the point of the original post Latsida

I was referring to my earlier post – which suggested putting the delivery address as the shop/kafenion, so it would be actually delivered to the kafenion, not just left there as an easy option

If its a large parcel, it would not fit in your mailbox or blue postbox – also, if it arrives by courier, he does not have a key for the blue boxes anyway, probably would not know which house was yours, and would need a signature.

So, do as the Greeks do and send it to a local business.

again I reiterate they do not need to leave  parcels in a shop or kafeneio in our area.
we pick up parcels, or the couriers phone to tell us that they have the parcel and they deliver it or we pick it up from the office,
but usually the parcel is delivered to our door, quite easy really.

if I put as my delivery address a kafeneio in this village I guarantee it would not be accepted on the website of the sender

I have enough problems with the fact that I do not have a street or even an address number

this might be correct in your area Binx but not here, no one has their parcels delivered to a a kafeneio here.
the original query  was for a parcel in the Ag. Nik. area so that was  the reply to the question.
it does not matter either way but I have never had to pick up a parcel from anywhere either than the post office or a courier’s office, never a kafeneio or store.

I have no idea if this is happening in Crete, but I did read it is happening in Athens.

I didn`t know people could pay their bills through the post man, we go to the post office to pay.

You take this form to the Post Office to collect your parcel as Latsida has already advised. Parcels are also left for pick up at the smaller Post Office on the way out of Ag. Nik (opposite the petrol station) and before you reach the traffic lights. Pick up point is at the back…. Post Office part is closed.
