Does anyone know if these are available on the island? Preferably in the Apokonaras area. Many Thanks

Sorry I can’t answer your question – but on the same subject does anybody have full details of any remembrance service being held at Souda Bay War Memorial this year?

Information on the annual ceremonies at Souda War Memorial can be obtained from the British Consulate in Heraklion. I believe a lady in the British Embassy in Athens coordinates arrangements.

Give the Vice Consulate a call in Heraklion to check. Contact details

If you know the schedule, kindly pass on in here.
                Thanks.

The Brit Consulate in Heraklion tells me that Keith Bailey MBE (a member of BritsinCrete) is responsible but the Consulate people say they have been unable to reach him. What a pity.

The information regarding the Souda service was posted on another Crete related website on 6th October 2010 by Keith Bailey.

Hopefully those of you who are interested will locate the posting. I have not given further details to avoid upsetting you Gerald ;)

                                Thank you Kathleen.

I am far from being upset because between you and Fowles you have proven a point for which I thank you.

Last year (2009) I spent a lot of my own time to find out the required information (you can see here ……
http://www.britsincrete.co.uk/cgi-bin/bicforum/YaBB.pl?num=1252303847). I encourage however all non profit organisations to promote their respective activities themselves.

In the case of Remembrance Day: Keith Bailey, carries the title of:
                                Keith G Bailey MBE
                                Armistice Memorial Coordinator,
Souda Bay CWG, (CWG = Commonwealth War Graves Commission)
                                Crete.

Clearly he passed information out to selective website(s) in July, but NOT this web site. (Thanks to Kathleen’s advice I did a google search to locate the info.)

Moving up to this past few days, it would have been generous for him or someone connected to him to have responded to Fowles request above and for others to have benefited in this forum from the information. This is after all a forum for Brits.

It is not as though Keith is unaware of us, indeed he is a member here. Now here is the crux of this matter ….

Some members think I am a pain the way I run this website with rules. But I have a simple philosophy in life "play fair" with me (and this forum) and I will reciprocate. But all too frequently rules are abused. Far too many come to this forum to use it for selfish reasons, as they often try to do with any gullible forum admin. So where does this link into the subject of Remembrance Day?

Keith should be mindful of the fact that to be selective with whom he shares his media information in what is after all a public ceremony he lays himself open to criticism.

It had not gone unnoticed however that the same thing happened for the annual Battle of Crete Remembrance, yet Keith saw fit to promote his other non charitable activities in this forum on not one but several occasions.

This I see as being unreasonable, and treating other members unfairly. Promoting the personal stuff and omitting the very public stuff!

For those who think it is hard cheese on my face, and one up to another forum that carries the requested information, my message to you is simply "grow up".

I would have thought the kudos earned by Keith for placing in a non partisan way the information in as many outlets as possible to spread the word of the Poppy Day (Armistice) Remembrance activities would make all concerned feel appreciative. Instead it just leaves a bad taste, at least to me.

As a postscript, I have left the Brit diplomats out of this as they are just a point of reference to events that relate to Souda and CWGC. It seems the key person appears to be KB.

As for the details of the Armistice ceremony 2010:
                                Place: Souda Bay Cemetery, Crete
Date: Sunday 14th November 2010, the service Time: 10:45 a.m.

I do believe that Mr Bailey MBE has posted information about the service on this web site already. I think that it’s in the  Ex-Pat News and Events Section. Not sure how to create a link.

                                    Hope this helps.

Blimey – I only asked where I could buy some poppies. Thanks Davethelocksmith and John4d. I got my poppy from Jon the butcher last week. Forgot to post where I bought it. Doh! ::)
