It all depends on your circumstances. I got my residence card last year, although I’m not resident!!!, but I needed it to register my car.
I went to the police station with photos, copies of passport, birth certificate & house deeds. That was all I needed to get my card.
Other friends of mine who are resident & had to renew theirs last year needed rental contracts for the house & work contracts as well as photos & copies of passports etc.
I think basically you have to prove that you can support yourself while living here. Some people who are living, but not working in Crete have been asked to provide bank statements (Greek bank) to show they have enough to live on.
I think it can also depend on which Police station you have to use.

Hi. If my wife and I were to retire to live on Crete, having obtained a residence permit, would we also have to have a national (Greek)I.D. card? Cheers. Phil

                    Hi Phillipus,

If you have a residence permit that is all you will need.

You will find that most people here that you may need to deal with will only be interested in seeing your passport.

                    Ken.

Hi folks. Is it a legal requirement to have a residence permit on Crete? I would have thought that with Greece being in the EU you wouldn’t need one. I know you previously had to have one but why would you need one now? You answers would be appreciated. Thanks Andy

You do not have to have a residents permit to live here, but if you want to obtain some services it can be a requirement, although through EU law it isn’t – is that clear?
You can buy a car without one if you have been living on Crete for less than 3 months, however, you will need to sign a declaration to that effect, but you will need to obtain a tax number.
If you do want to apply for a R/P, you cannot do so until you have lived here for 3 months.
That is my understanding (according to a lawyer I used to assist in getting my tax no.), it may well be disputed by others, but the rules seem to vary from area to area.
I have been living here a month in rented accommodation, I do not have a R/P as yet, but I do now own a car.

When we first moved here 4 years ago we had to get a residents permit, then we went a year later to get it updated.

The man told us we didn`t need to get another one again, we did however obtain an A.M.C.A, local offices near town halls have an office issuing these, you take passports, bank statements, that prove you transfer over 10 grand a year here, anything less and the tax man will charge you.

Residents permits are not now an essential thing here , according to our lawyer, as long as you have a bank statement for your accountant ,to prove you have over 10 grand a year transfered to support you.

Many thanks to Pee Bee and Binx. One thing i’m still not clear on though. If you have the required amount of income coming from the UK does it have to be transfered through a Greek bank or can you draw it straight from the UK? My british bank statements will show my income and that it was spent on cards and drawn through cash machines on Crete. Would that be enough proof? We plan on renting a house so the only thing we will need a tax number for possibly is if we buy a car over there. Would I need a tax number at all if we are renting and using a friends car? We used to live on Crete for a year 4 years ago, returned to the UK because of a job offer but plan to return soon so we know generally how things are but this is the one topic that appears to have changed since our time there. Many thanks again for your input.

If you are renting legally, your landlord/lady will need your tax number to put on the contract as this is then filed with their tax office.

I also had to provide my tax number when I went with our landlord to DEH to get the electricity put in my name.  Same was true with OTE. Vodafone also need the tax number if you want to get a contract phone.

Also, we were asked for tax number when we opened a Greek bank account (they also asked for residents permit but when we explained we couldn’t get that until we’d been here 3 months, they were happy to accept passport).

We were recently in my husband’s bank and were giving over paperwork and the teller looked at us and asked why we had residents permits as we were EU citizens!

After five years you get a permanent residents permit.

You have to have an Affeme , this has your tax number on it and other things so I believe.

We pay tax in England as it is cheaper so far to do that. If you live here long term you have to prove to the accountant that you can support yourself, so you need to transfer about 10 grand a year to the bank here, and get a statement from them.

HSBC as far as I know have a " fax indemnity", we have not used that way to transfer money here to the bank. A fax indemnity will transfer money over for about 20 quid or so.

We use currenciesdirect.com, if you transfer money over 500 quid with them you pay no commission and get top rates and not tourist exchange.

I cannot recomment this company highly enough , as they look after you well.

I think you need to get a good accountant here to sort you out, our Greek friend sorted all this out for us.

Do you have to obtain the "residence permit" from your local police station or is there another local source?

It’s usually the Tourist Police that you have to get it from. Can’t help with where you are as I’m at the other end of the island.

I was told to go to the Tourist Police in Heraklion & went armed with all my papers, oh no!!! Even though I live in Heraklion prefecture, I come under Agios Mironas Police for the issuing of Residence Card. Not a problem I got the card 18 months ago. It should be your local Police station that you apply to.
Mine was definately NOT issued by the Tourist Police, although I am aware that in Heraklion some peoples have been.

We know a couple who went all the way to Heraklion to get their permits to be told that they shouldn’t have gone there but since they were there they would just issue the permits there and then!

Take to the police station passport photos, passport, Greek bank book and IKA book(s)and the old blue residence permits. We waited about 10 days and got our new permits without any problem. I THINK we took our British NHS cards, but as we are Pensioners our Greek IKA books were more important.
