Hi all and thank you for letting me join. My husband and I want to move to Crete ( Almyrida, Plaka, Vamos area ) and were going to wait until we retire ( another 10 years for me ) however as for many people COVID has made us see that sometimes one has to do what they want now rather than later. I have worked for the NHS for the last 30 years now so have seen the best and worst outcomes of illness ect.

We would like to rent first hand then possibly buy later, but my questions of apart from rent, what are the running costs approx of a 2-3 bed property for heating air con water WiFi ect, and approx monthly food bill, we are normal eaters ( pub grub 🤪 type ) and don’t have a lavish lifestyle. I know it’s hard to comment but at the moment we are working out budget wise if it is achievable. Oh and we will bring our best four legged friend too.

many thanks I look forward to hearing from you. 😍

            Hi Jane57,

I have just joined today, and don’t have as much info probably as the longer members, but, my Partner and I rented a 3 bed villa in Kalyves in October last year with the intention of staying until end of March 21, then lockdown happened after 1 week!!!

We came home to UK, 6 weeks later, cos of Covid, but, we found that depending where you shop, the Food prices are maybe slightly less than UK,But others are higher, ie,UK Dairy products! We paid €600 winter month rent, the water cost is ok, but electric is very expensive, again it was Winter! If it’s just for you and dog, get 2 bed place, flat or small house,I can recommend Claudia at Crete-island estates, for rental or Maria at Minoan Properties, or Marlize at Alpha-Omega Estates, all in Kalyves, I hope this helps a little!! By the way we are moving to Crete in 3 weeks time to live, hopefully for quite some time!! Good Luck!! Toni

Good morning Jane 57 and Adamski T

It is good to see such enthusiasm for retirement in Crete. Hope you had obtained your Greek residence permits before December 31, 2020 and to convert before June 30, 2021 to the new aliens (no, not from outer space) non EU nationals’ biometric permit. Otherwise, please put in perspective however the requirements to take up long term stay in Greece, post Brexit. The bureaucracy, if challenging before, is still in place, and some.

Do your own research, as much as possible

Other recent articles cover this topic thoroughly in this website. You could start here.

I am not trying to put a damper on enthusiasm, but in this cranky world we are living in today, things are what they are and we have to persist to achieve our objective – long term staying in Greece.

You no longer can just hop on a plane and nip over to a Greek island… well you can, but you will know the difference between pre-Brexit and now when you arrive at airport immigration.

This site covers so many related topics, just do your own research in here, using the search function.

I appreciate you finding our Brits in Crete Forum and hope you find the way to enjoy the best of retirement in Crete.

By the way, as I write it is beautiful today. Check out the weather in Chania  Prefecture, including Kalives!

                Hope that is helpful

Hi we are also looking at retiring to Crete and have just joined the forum, we did look at it several years ago and did not go ahead which with hindsight seems a big mistake. It does seem complicated although we have been in touch with a lawyer in Chania who seems to be able to help us through the process, (not going to be cheap though). We have only been to Crete twice and did not see much of the Island, we stayed near Kissamos, we visited Paxos for many years but property is too expensive there and as we have got older we realise we need to go to a bigger Island with more facilities. We will be interested to see how you all get on with your move.

                    Take care

                    Lynda

Hi all, we have just joined the forum as like yourselves we are looking to move to Crete in April 2022. Our story so far is a little like Jane 57. I have also got 10 years until retirement and have worked for the NHS for 22 years. We will be moving with our 4 legged friend a German Shepherd. My husband has converted a van into a small motorhome for the 3 of us and we will hopefully be staying on campsites until we decide where in Crete we want to settle.

I have been looking on the Greek Embassy website to get a year long Visa for us both and the form we have to complete has a few complex questions. If anyone has completed it and had a successful interview at the embassy I would appreciate any help/advice you can offer.

We have also got to get the dog sorted out and our vet said they will do that for us as the paperwork for her takes a longtime to complete.

Good luck with your moves everyone and hopefully we may all meet next year in lovely Crete.

                                All the best

                                Yve

                                    Hi Yvie

Spookily, I am also NHS (24 years), looking to retire to Crete next year with my wife. We can’t afford to buy a property (and would be wary anyway, some expat friends have finally sold after much drama and time), so we too are looking at a national d visa.

One word of advice regarding the motorhome plan. Crete is notoriously expensive to import vehicles. Some German friends brought a Renault Espace over 2 years ago. The police finally caught him, and he had to get rid of the car because he couldn’t afford the duty. He couldn’t sell it because he couldn’t register it, so he ended up giving it to a local garage to break for parts.

You have probably already looked into this, but forewarned is forearmed.

All the best with your move, and maybe meet up in a seaside bar this time next year!

                                    Regards

                                    Mik

                                        Hi Mik,

Just joined the forum, thanks for letting me in (I’m Swiss, not brit, sorry)!

I like to move to Crete in January and I would appreciate any good advise in order not to make the same mistakes like probably many you you experienced. Couldn’t I bring in may car tax free as moving goods if I owned for more than 6 months?

                                        Thanks for your answers!

                                        Cheers, Erich

                                            Hi Mik

Thanks for the advice about the van and sorry to hear what happened to your German friends. We have looked into this and we are still confused as to whether we can take our van on a years visa. More investigation needed I feel as we do not want to have to break it for parts. Do you know if we can apply for a years visa on a year by year basis and do you know what issues your friends had selling their property? We have seen properties for sale on Right Move for quite a long time in Greece.

Hope to see you both in a Crete beach bar next year to :-).

                                            Bye for now
