Does anyone a good shop in the Chania area where I can buy a general puropse satellite receiver? I’ll go to Iraklion too. . .

I saw some in Champion last time we were out in Hania. I dont know if they are still available, but worth a look.

Check out LIDL’s offers from 11th Sept. They have a sat package (inc. dish) at Eur 99, or receiver only at Eur 70. http://www.lidl.gr/gr/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20060911.index

If you Google "LIDL Satellite", you’ll get some reviews of the kit. The basic opinion seems to be good enough at the price, with odd units affected by overheating. As they offer a 3 year guarantee, it’s probably worth a punt if you don’t want anything fancy.

Do you know what you want, which satellites etc?
As they say size is all important so with the Lidl offer you may need to buy a bigger dish.
Do you only want to watch the God channels, free to air, or do you want to watch encrypted channels as well, where you will need a receiver that can take a viewing card.

OK am I crazy or what?

Thanks to you guys I have just been to Lidles and bought the 99 Euro kit

Why crazy? I do not have a TV!!

Sometime we will get round to buying a TV, no hurry all the while the sun shines!

Couple of things you did not mention:

The instruction book is very comprehensive, only problem is that it’s in Greek!
I also bought a "satellite finder" for 6 Euro. There is already one included in the kit.

The kit has a 57 cm dish. They also are selling a larger one. Should I buy this as well? My thoughts are that I could point the second dish at another satellite and get more programs. Is this feasable or will I need the larger dish to get any programs at all? Don’t know if it is relevant but I am in the Ag Nik area.

                                    Thanks in advance

                                    John

                                        Hi John,
well what do you know i kinda had a shoping trip to Lidles today as well, :) however i bought it all seprate, so i could get the 80cm dish instead of the included 57cm the only thing was when i got home there was no cable to link the dish with the box & yes its Monday so its 1/2 day everyware so it wil have to wait till tomorow i guess, still it looks ok and the fact it has 2 CI’s means you can add a card to it if you want to subscribe to a package deal at some point, i will be setting it up tomorow (tuesday) i suppose so i will let you know how it goes.

If anyone else has bought a Lidle’s satellite package you can get the English instructions here http://www.mysilvercrest.de/

How did you get on – I can’t hold my breath much longer.

Last night I bought a TV to go with the sat set up and need your tips/advice.

Silly thought. Could I have saved money by just buying a computor monitor?

                                                        Terry

I have had a similar problem, hours of adjusting the dish with no success.

I went to a satellite installer in Ag Nik who asked me to bring the box and the dish to his workshop. He took one look at the dish and said that I would get nothing with "that thing". He connected the box to his 3 meter dishes, he has two pointed at different satellites, and all he could pick up were 3 or 4 German channels. He said it would work fine in Athens but no good for Crete!

In the normal Greek way, he then told me what I should have done. ie Gone to him first, he would have supplied the TV we bought at a cheaper price as he does not stock TV’s. The money we saved doing this would have paid for a decent system and he would have fitted it free!

He is now going to come to us, fit 2 dishes, each aimed at different sats, and see if we can get anything on the Lidle gear. He will also fit a terrestrial aerial. He will also bring one of his boxes. If we decide to have his box as well the total cost will be 250 Euro plus the cost of the terrestrial aerial (he does not know which one we will need). If we don’t have his box it will be less.

I have also posted on "another popular site" and asked if anyone has actually got the Lidle system to work in Crete. Someone has posted that it is "brilliant" & told me to download the English instructions, so I have asked if he/she is in Crete. No reply yet.

                                                        How have you got on?

                                                            Hi John,
I have given up for now, i cant get on the roof at the moment so i cant point the dish west, we are moving house in the middle of November so i think i will leave it till then and get a local sat installer to do it right so it works first time, i took the box back to Lidle and got a refund, when to smart office in Ierapetra and Tom gave me an old Nokia satellite receiver of his so when we are safely installed in th enew house we should have some real TV at last….

About satellite dishes, I remember when we left to Naxos, we took a set with us, also from Lidl, a lot of troubles on the plane, and finally it didn’t work as we wanted.
What should be reminded: The dish must be at least 100 CM on Naxos island to receive Astra satellite, and you also need a digital receiver. Analog you can forget they say. So we bought a big dish of 1 meter, and now we can receive all German channels, some Flemish and some English ones. The smaller dish I tried once and it is possible to receive hotbird with it, but you need to point it out precisly.
For all works a setellite meter is a must, don’t try to do it without because it depends on cm’s sometimes.

There is a shop near the central Chania bus station that sells free-to-air satellite receivers and all of the trimmings for very good prices. The guy who owns the shop is a former Nova technician and really knows his stuff. He also builds custom computers.

He’s a class act and he showed me how to do everything from dish installation to programming of the receiver (which cost a scant euro 55). I recommend his shop to everyone.

The Shop is called "Digital Target," and it is located on Ionias Street. His number is 28210-99369 or mobile: 6972032082.

                                                                    Good night and good luck,

I waited for two months after my first post on BIC and then finally, at a baptism, I ran into a dude who knew a guy who had a friend who built computers and did satellite T.V. stuff. I went to his store and found everything I needed.

This is why I love Crete!
