Our 2 panel system with included heater and 250 litre tank and installation cost us around 8oo euros ( mind you the euro was 1.47 to the pound then! )

Today is should cost 950 euros that includes fitting, you said hot water only but solars are for hot water, until the sun takes its hat off then its cold water.
Most tanks are fitted with an immersion elements fitted to an electric supply, to give you hot water when the sun don’t shine.
Make sure the tank you buy is chrome finished inside to stop rusting, be careful you can still unknowingly obtain a tank with no protective finish on the inside.
Loads of expats here can tell you were to go, when you start your build or what ever.

Thanks for the replies, these are  helpful as I had no idea of total costs and the figures given are a lot cheaper than I first thought.
Reason I mentioned "hot water only" I didn’t wish to prompt replies regarding solar panels for electrical generation as these now seem to becoming popular too.
