I was watching the news the other night and was shocked at the severity of the problems in Athens, all very negative talk of dozens of soup kitchens feeding the …not only poor but people left destitute due to the so called austerity measures, suicide rate greatly up etc , is there any signs of that type of problem in Crete?
Yes Brian there is.
Although still UK based, I belong to a Cretan facebook group called Give. It’s postings are in Greek, but you can translate them using google translate.
This is a group set up by the local people to help others who are in need, clothes, food, medicines, furniture, offers of work etc etc. Some of the things you come across on there are heartbreaking. An 8 year old boy collapsed in Heraklion through malnutrition, both parents unemployed. His neighbours took him to hospital & have helped the family with food.
A mother arrested for stealing milk for her baby, because she is destitute. The requests for help go on & on! But people ARE helping. I’m taking some baby clothes out with me & will be clearing out my wardrobe in Crete & giving the clothes to Give to re-distribute to whoever needs them.
Thanks for the reply Ros :)
good idea ref taking clothes to pass on. We are not back out till september and will check out if there are any "help" centres around agios nicolas to heraklion areas.
I also hear there are a lot of east european beggars decending on Greece/Crete which wont help. :(
If anyone knows of such centres it would be nice to post them, so those of us that can help, be it even in a small way can contribute.
