I suppose this has been a topic in the past but could anyone advise as to how we go about getting new glasses and an eye test please.

Is it a complicated procedure, such as getting papers stamped like they do in IKA and then told to go to different places.

Would it be cheaper to fly back to the UK and get glasses rather than here ?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

quote from my reply of October 11th
First you go to an Ophthalmologist for the test usually around 30 euros, you are normally seen straight away.
you will be given your prescription which you then take to the opticians where you chose your glasses .
I asked for prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses.
I ordered the glasses here but ordered the contacts via the internet.
you can also go to IKA and get a paper which saves you the 30 euros but it is hardly worth the hassle.

We have heard from a couple of folks that they are very, very expensive in Crete – can anyone say if that was their experience?

If you know your prescription, you can order from the UK http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/.
They don’t ship abroad at the moment, but if you have a freind or relative in the UK, you can get them sent on.
They also have a handy little gadget where you can upload a photo of yourself and try out different frames to see what they look like.

Hi barbary coaster, think I paid around 250 , they are Diesel, but I was limited in choice as my glasses have to be very narrow or the lenses would be very thick around the edges.
you can choose cheap or expensive frames, although like the clothes here Greeks do not stint when they buy personal items .
do not think it is exactly cheap in the UK although some of the high street chains offer second pair reduced or free, but they usually try to guide you towards expensive lenses etc.
returning to the UK just for a pair of glasses seems rather extreme but if you are visiting anyway then it might be worth getting a new pair there.

Another tip, if your old frames are ok then just get your new prescription and order new lenses for the old frames.
I have two old pairs of glasses that I intend to have the lenses replaced

                                Ok here we go….

You have IKA, ok you ring for an appointment with the opthalmist(sic),  they give you a date in one month`s time.

You pick up your appointment card from IKA Center.

On the day of your appointment you wait outside the office, (Having checked your name is on the list on the door first)

You wait till he/she has had her /his coffee and then you are invited inside for your examination.
(Unless there is somebody else who is more important than you, ie, child with sight problems, pregnant woman, old YaYa who is going blind)
ok we accept this and wait another hour.

You have your eye examination, very thorough, and the Opthamist(sic) says yes you need glasses.
Here is your form with the +/- deficiency in your eye sight,  if it is less than +/-5% from normal
you cannot claim from IKA.(I think that is the paramiters)

OK, so it is above this limit,…..Now you take the form to the man on the second floor, at the end of the corridor, for the preverbial stamp…

So now you have the authority to claim your glasses free( cough) on  IKA.

You go to an Opthampic dispenser(sic  again) and choose your glasses/style/design  that fits within the IKA cost.

MMMMMM there is a problem, We only have the basic type of glasses at the price IKA gives you.

OK,, No problem you choose these and offer the paper that IKA has given you to the Opthalmist,  Thank you very much,  but you must pay first, we give you a receipt and you take it back to IKA to claim it back.

OHH, ok then, so I pay 200Euros (for example) hoping to get back the same.

Back to IKA, must get there early in the morning, 7am, just to get a ticket for the B side….(Remembering to take all the documents, copied, etc.)

Wait till my number is called, apart from the pregnant women, old Ya ya`s, zooming in front,  and those with Simmer frames queing up before me without a ticket.

Eventually I am served ,smiling to the woman behind the perspex screen(Why I don`t know, mmm maybe I realise when a village person pushed me out of the way wanting to know when his number 3 million after mine will be called….DOH)

So, wait again at the other counter, till she decided to look at me,  looks at the documents, mmmm  all ok, stamped with a smidgen off coffee she spilt.

Then, big rush up to the payment desk,  2 floors up, easier to walk than take the lift…

Guess what,  another trail of people, ok wait in line again…eventually get to the perspex glass fronted counter,,  Give my forms, stamped, double stamped and some forms even triple stamped, whoo hoo,

So IKA give me free of charge glasses,  at the end of all this palarver, I pay 200 euro`s for glasses and get back maybe 160 Euro`s.

So what was free cost me 40 Euro`s plus maybe 15/20 hrs of my time. but hey this is Greece.

                                My advice…..go private

                                I

30 euros ,seen straight away round to the optician, glasses ready in a few days, can not see what the problem is
can you get free specs in the UK, maybe for certain people
                                    http://www.habazar.com/opticaldirectory/nhs.htm
my eyes are so bad that I always qualified for a free prescription.
does anyone remember the range of NHS glasses that were on offer?
Here you pay 25% towards the cost for all health prescriptions, unless you have a chronic disease or need special medication and if you qualify you pay 10%.

Have your 30€ eye test, get the prescription and order from a company like this:

                                        http://www.glasses2you.co.uk/

They are advertising ‘worldwide delivery’ and seem to have a decent range at very reasonable cost.

Plenty of similar suppliers, just Google ‘cheap spectacles’, and check out to see if delivery is available to Crete   8-)
