A few days ago I finally got to see inside this absolute gem of a site. The church sits pretty innocuously in Exo Laconia on the plain between Neapoli and Ayios Nikolaos. I first read about it in an early book on travels in Crete, by Adam Hopkins possibly, however all of my previous visits found the church locked. So, being on Crete for Ayios Mixalis’ Day (Nov 11th) I attended the service the evening before. The frescoes inside this tiny, charming church are stunning and just as Hopkins described, as vivid as anything you will find on Crete, including the famous Panayia at Kritsa. The added bonus is this is completely free.
I don’t know why the church is not advertised locally. I stay in Neapoli regularly and hardly anyone i speak to is aware of it. I appreciate there are problems with access, availability of keys etc, but if you are determined enough i assure you your effort will be rewarded. (The church lies back a little on the left hand side of the road coming from Neapoli direction just before the football stadium and near where the road splits to Kritsa/Lato) Edited:Spelling
