        Hey
Just a quick update to let you know we are having the house valued next week, then it’s going to go on the market.
The decision has been made after lots of research, a lot of very helpful advice from here and elsewhere, and also the fact that our so called family, with the exclusion of my Mam have been so negative, bitchy and spiteful we just can’t be bothered with them any more.
You only live once so hey might as well live it together where we can be happy.
And two fingers to those so called friends and family whom I’m sure will start crawling out of the woodwork when it suits them !
        Kindest regards

        Ricky & Cath
        oh
        And Ralph the Mongrel !!!
        (actually he’s a spaniel)
…and yes I do know about the requirements for taking the dog with us didn’t I say I was ‘SAVVY’ ? ;)
        :) :) :)

            Ricky, Cath (and Ralph)
Good luck in your new venture, hope it works out for you all (I’m sure Ralph will love it)
I overheard a couple of friends at out farewell party saying that they thought we would last 2 years before coming back to the UK, they were wrong.
Having visited earlier in this month it convinced me that `kicking and screaming’ would form part of the expression I would use regarding their prediction.  ;D

It’s funny Mr Ricky, I have fell out with my brother and we don’t talk anymore since coming here and I wonder if it is a common thing when people decide to move abroad? The rest of the family say he is jealous but I can’t believe that as he has no reason to be. Hey ho I am sure it will work out in the end. Like you say, you only have one life and this aint no rehearsal, good luck

Scooby, I would say your brother is more selfish and not only a bit jealous. He wants you there as you always have been………. his problem !!! One has to do what one feels is right for them at the time and if others don’t like it then it is their problem!!!

When I came here to Crete 22 years ago, even my parents (I am an only child) said as long as I am happy then they are happy for me………. that’s love. My parents have unfortunately passed away now but all my friends and family say…………. ‘never come back here, you’ll have a huge shock, stay there’!!!! I intend to stay here and why not, I have work, I have a small house with land but above all…………I am happy and to me that is the important thing….be happy and if others aren’t with your leaving……… that’s their choice…………

………and good luck Mr Ricky, I hope it all goes well but if not, it is better to have tried than think about it for the rest of your life.

                        Ricky,
a friend of ours came out here to live in January. When she told them at work what she was planning to do, several of her "friends" at work refused to have anything more to do with her! She never did find out why, as they weren’t speaking to her .

I think maybe some people envy us our courage or determination to leave the UK behind & come here. It’s their problem & you’ll make lots of new friends here. I know you can’t choose your family, but friends are your choice.

Lots of luck in your new life.

                        Jackie

We are desperate to leave Greece. Big mistake to come here! Racist comment yesterday (yet another) along the lines of "you English………. showed just how much we are appreciated for all the 1000s of Euros we spend propping up the economy! Don’t want to go back full time to the UK but had enough of here. Think very carefully Mr Ricky! All we wanted was a quiet relaxing life and we have been fighting non stop battles and have been ripped off as most expats are. It doesn’t matter how very careful and thorough you are doing research etc Bottom line is basically any Greek with a little bit of power/money/authority treats you like …. Beware of Greeks baring gifts – haven’t seen any with gifts but they ALL want something. By the way we have some lovely Greek friends and acquaintances who are "ordinary’ people in shops and tavernas etc I feel sorry for them as they aren’t treated well.
                            Think carefully – DONT BUY!!!!!!!!!

                                Ricky,
I agree with Gem but only the bit about not buying. We are renting long term & all the money we got from the sale of our house in the UK remains in the UK. I think buying a house here is a bit of a mine field & building one is even more so.
I’m really glad we decided to rent. We have a lovely property in approximately two acres of olive grove with views of Souda Bay & the mountains. I think even if you decide to buy, it’s a good idea to rent for a year to see how you get on here, especially in the winter.

                                Gem,
we’ve never had any racist comments from Greeks. As far as your comment about any Greek with a little bit of power etc, don’t you think that’s a bit racist? Anyway, they treat each other in the same way, as anyone who has ever spent a little time in the IKA office in Souda will tell you!

Just to let you know we have no intention whatsoever of buying just seems ridiculous for us to even contemplate, so we are looking in several different areas now. Certainly not looking for some luxurious villa with a pool, just somewhere reasonable in price no frills for at least six months to get settled and explore the possibilities and options and also to see what is going to happen with the Euro. We have taken on board the negatives but my fiancee’s sister and her snidey 22 yr old daughter are our next door neighbour and to be quite honest they’re the ones with all there negativity and bitchiness have put the final stamp on our decision. It’s fine when they want something from us but it doesn’t work both ways with them. No congratulations when we got engaged. So sod em. It’s our life and we’ll live it our way. Savvy ?
                                    :)

Good for you!  Better to try to realise your dreams than spend the rest of your life wondering "what if…………?"

One piece of advice though – as soon as you arrive with Ralph go to the pharmacy and get the antidote injections for poison.  You can never be too careful here and better safe than sorry.

Good luck with the sale of your house and your move to the start of a new exciting life.

We are thinking of somewhere near Khania at the minute, looks like we can get a reasonable furnished place at an affordable monthly rent.
But still early days got the house to sell yet !

Best of luck with selling the house. We came here leaving our house in the UK up for sale, in the hands of agents. It took us over a year to get rid of it, then we took a large "hit" on the price we sold it for. That was about 14 months ago.

I agree with Gem wholeheartedly about George the vet in Souda. He is a lovely man, speaks fluent English and you’ll find him much cheaper than any English vet. So, if you end up living in the Chania/Apokoronas region, as Gem says, he’s a legend!

If anyone is looking for a very nice, 3bedroom semi detached house very large rear garden, small front garden, all mod cons, GCH, dble glazing in a quiet avenue about a mile from Bury, Greater Manchester with a Peugeot 206cc ’52 reg thrown in, I know someone who is selling up at a verk reasonable £160K. I think they can also negotiate if you would like the furniture too, it’s all under two years old.
