Early this year I asked TomTom if they planned to produce a Greek map to replace the one they withdrew in 2005. They replied that they didn’t produce the maps but bought them from another company. They thought it unlikely that an up-to-date one would be available for a couple of years.

I bought a SatNav in Multirama and it has a very old map of Greece (including Crete). I reckon it’s at least 10 years old. It’s better than nothing but I’m looking forward to an update. The guy in Multirama said that there were plans to introduce postcodes in 2010 so the map-makers may be holding off till then.

I’d prefer to have a Greek map on my TomTom, rather than this "Mio" device that I’m using, which is crude in comparison.

                Hi MartinP
could you explain your statement about Postcodes.
We have always had a postcode, mine is
                72400, Neapoli area.

That’s an area code. A postcode (as used in the UK) would lead someone almost to your door.

                        Thanks MartinP,
This would not work in my case as the road I live in has no name ;)

i had heard the map of greece was poor and you’ve just confirmed it, the addition of a tom tom map is £40 and all i need it for is 3 or 4 weeks a year on holiday on Crete, so i will hold off for a year or so as a 10 year old one would be more annoying than helpfull.

Likewise here. That’s why proper postcodes would be darn useful.

I spoke to the people at Tom Tom earlier in the year. They informed me that their maps of Greece do not contain any of the islands. I also contacted another one of the sat nav producers (I think it was Garmin) theirs do include Crete but not down to street level. Hope this helps.

I am not sure where this 10 year thing came from – perhaps it is not TomTom??

I have TomTom, and they brought out a new Greece map about 2 years ago, which I bought for a journey to/from the UK.

The mainland Greece part of it seems fine, I have used it several times now including a trip to northern Greece.   Driving through Piraeus and Athens in rush hour, it was absolutely invaluable, saved a lot of stress !!

As far as Crete is concerned it is a bit basic, it has the National Road, the equivalent of A-roads, and a few B-roads, but not much more.  A friend has Garmin and it is the same.

However I have never felt the need to use it on Crete as the island does not seem big enough to make it worthwhile.

My memory is failing. It wasn’t "earlier this year" when I asked. It was 2007.

Currently we do not have any maps available for Greece.
We wish to offer our customers as many options as possible as a company. It is, therefore, very likely that we will be offering such maps in the future.

We offer the opportunity of registering your e-mail address to receive the TomTom newsletter to stay informed about the latest developments.

                                                With best regards,

Are they definitely offering one now? How much is it?

Covers 81% of Greece, 201000km’s and 150 ferry connections. £39.95.

I agree with Bob, having spent so much time in Crete I don’t really see the need for one that covers there or the other islands for that matter.

I bought an XL340 covering UK, ROI and much of Europe with a view to driving down early next year. Pat was always a shocking navigator  ;) Current circumstances, unfortunately, now mean this is unlikely to happen.

We’ve just moved here and I got lost just trying to find our house from the village square one night! I’ve found the SatNav extremely useful in navigating Hanya and Rethymnon.
It’s a bit "hit n miss" on the Highway, since the map’s about 10 years old.

                                                                Hi Brian.

We have downloaded the Greek maps onto out Tom Tom and yes it does include Crete. They work well.

I would thoroughly recommend any one travellling either UK/Crere or Crete/UK to have a SatNav, at least to get them to the point of entry/Exit on Crete, it should pay for itself on petrol you save in not getting lost on the highwayts (see for yourself a bargain price when you buy it).
