The “Travelling England" festival opened on the 12th July as informed by the British Consulate, Heraklion. In this "Year of Kazantzakis” This five-day art and literature festival is a tribute to Nikos Kazantzakis connection to the British. He is of course a modern Cretan Hero whose name is synonymous to the spirit of the #Cretan people and their identity.

This event is an inspired initiative by the Kazantzakis Museum and partners to dedicate this year’s event to his travels, particularly in England. The events are now taking place in Heraklion and Myrtia from 12 to 16 July 2017. The British Embassy is represented by the Vice-Consul, Claire Fragaki.

If you are in Crete do not miss the festival days full of Literature and Art, readings, theater, dance, music, exhibitions, events and children’s activities.

Nikos Kazantzakis was in England at the invitation of the British Council shortly before the outbreak of WW II. Initially residing in London, he travels to the industrial cities of the north, Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield, as far as Peterborough, Eton and finally Stratford, the birthplace of Shakespeare. He writes about his impressions of this trip while on the island of Aegina in the summer of 1940.

The keen eye of the Cretan writer brings to readers today an image of the country and its people in a transitional period. It is another opportunity to highlight the multifaceted and long-standing ties of the two nations that constitute a fixed point of reference in a changing world.

How to go + more info is after the Greek text.

Taken from an e-mail sent to us on 13th July by the British Consulate. Acopy is being kept on file.

It is such a shame we did not get earlier notice of this event.

This is a worthwhile trip for anyone with Anglo-Greek, Anglo-Cretan interests on holiday or living in Crete and have a car.

The museum is located in the village of Myrtia in the Archanes municipality which is some 20 kms +/- south of Heraklion. For GPS purposes the museum is at coordinates @35.23504,25.207074. There is a limited bus service to the area.

Am I correct to say that the poster should read Travelling and not Traveling? The former is the English spelling (and appropriate to the subject matter). The latter is the American way to spell the word?

            Just a thought.

Yes, English favours two Ls in the middle of a word and one at the end (travelling, until). American spelling tends to be the opposite, but with exceptions such as "spelling"!

Frankly, I’m not bothered which is used, provided that it’s not ambiguous and has the correct meaning.

What I dislike is childish and unnecessary abbreviations (e.g. u instead of you) and incorrect spelling, which changes the meaning (e.g. accept and except).
