We are extending our garden and need to buy a fair number of plants – for a windbreak amongst others. Who do you recommend who speaks English, can deal with Latin names of plants, has a good selection of good quality plants, and is good value.

We live around 20 min from Kalives, but quite happy to travel as far as Chania to Georgiopoulis area.

There is a garden centre at Plaka on the Kokkino Chorio road out and there is another one at Kalyves on the road up towards the national road.  Both have good plant selections and the staff speak English.  The guy who works in the Plaka garden centre also has a good command of  Latin names too.  Both are good value.  There is also a good garden centre at Georgopolis on the junction in off the national road.  Chania has several all around town.  Good luck and happy gardening.

The one at Plaka is part of the En Kypo business. The owners were trained in the UK and are very knowledgable and helpful. Yes, they know the Latin names, of course.

The guy at Plaka is very helpful. We also bought from a garden centre just out of Chania near the Omalos Road. I think it is the biggest in our area and when we were last there it was very well stocked.

I can offer another endorsement for Stelios in the Plaka garden centre, service includes free delivery of the larger more awkward items-after he closes shop at 6pm.

If you know exactly what you want then the Kalives garden centre or the recent one in Vryses on the road out of town southwards may have them at lower prices, especially for the more common stuff (roses/bouzi/hottentot fig/oleander/figs/citrus etc etc)
