I’m hoping to go to uk for 4-6 weeks over christmas from Chania to Gatwick or Heathrow. I don’t think Bristol or Exeter operate from Greece during the winter. Are Olympic & British Airways the only options at this time of year?

From Hania the only option using one airline is Olympic (to LHR). Alternatively, go to Athens with Olympic or Aegean then Easyjet for Athens to Gatwick. It’s likely to be fairly expensive as all airlines increase their fares for periods they know lots of people will want to travel – Easter, Christmas, school holidays etc.

PS I think Olympic also fly Crete/Gatwick via Thessaloniki.

Is it possible to book Easyjet flights (from crete) without a credit card? If I book now I can get from Chania to Gatwick via Athens with Aegean & Easyjet & back 6 weeks later for E166 including all taxes etc. Olympic & BA are asking silly prices for this.

I think the short answer is ‘No’, unfortunately.

If you go into a travel agents you can book the easyjet flights and pay cash it is more expensive than the internet price though, we opted for olympic as was not much more expensive (on certain days) & flight connections a lot more convienient!!!

Keep a regular watch on the Easyjet site (you can sign up for their newsletter) as they sometimes have incredible deals. E.g. a couple of years ago they had a special offer Athens/Gatwick or Luton including taxes etc for about £22 with the return trip at £55 (available throughout November).

As you probably know, the earlier you book the cheaper it is and it helps if you can be flexible about which day you fly. Last time we did Athens/UK return EJ cost about €120 each, inclusive. Add approx. €40 for return ferry tickets and the airport express bus and the total was about £115 each. (UK/Athens on the same dates would have cost a bit more).

:( I have no cards of any kind. I know I could book Easyjet flights through a travel agent in UK but I’m quite sure I can’t over here. Have tried lots of different dates with Olympic but nothing less than E350. Shame Agean don’t fly to UK any more as I got an excellent 6 week deal over christmas back in 2001. Maybe I’ll have to walk!

You can definatly book easyjet and pay cash in the travel agents here in Malia.

If your local travel agent wont do it, look for you nearest easyjet internet cafe if you dont have a card.

I don’t know if this agent can book EJ but she’s worth a try. Even if not she may be able to find something else. Several times she’s found some really good deals for friends of ours.

Just for the record, and to go back a bit, you asked about British Airways.

GB Airways, who operate the BA flights to Heraklion, tell me that they have definitely NO plans to start flights in the winter at present, despite several magazine articles saying these are coming soon! I e-mailed their communications manager and so have it from the horse’s mouth, as it were!

They did say that if the demand was there they might consider it for their 07/08 winter season, but that ideally there would need to be more hotels etc open throughout the year to make it worthwhile. I have suggested they give it a trial period and they might be pleasantly surprised, but who knows!

There’s been lots of discussion about this (especially on another site when it was a bit more sensible than it is at the moment). Like you, I contacted BA/GB Airways (in July) and got an answer about a month later. In the e-mail they stated categorically "*NO* winter flights direct to Crete".

Some of the threads on I********i are quite interesting. If you want to read some go to the site and enter in the search box:

                                                        4. Direct flights

On some of the threads our old friend "Warwick the Oracle" adds some (as usual) astute comments, as does Saravista and several others. My 2 cents worth is there too, although it may be worth less than that. Someone, SteveM, I think even tried to organise a Christmas charter but couldn’t raise enough support. (Short notice but he said he’d try again this year, starting sooner).

The general consensus seems to be that direct winter flights UK/Crete will not happen for a long time.

I had an e mail from GB Airways about 10 months ago when they started operating out of Manchester, they said they definately weren’t planning on extending their service to include a Manchester to Heraklion scheduled service through the summer.

8 weeks later there was a BA sale advertised in the Papers – Manchester-Heraklion £120 return twice a week with Gatwick going to 4 days a week!!!!

Tourist demand was significantly increased so it would make commercial sense to respond to demand. I don’t believe there are enough UK residents, full or part-time to create sufficient demand for a weekly flight between one UK airport and one on Crete (and it would be Heraklion, I think). That’s the minimum an airline would need to obtain a route licence. Where are all these people? Would they all want to travel for the same duration on outbound and return flights?

Around E400! :-? Does anyone know with Easyjet must the name on the ticket be the same as the name on the credit card? If not I could give a friend the money & they could book it

I’ve searched EJ FAQ section and can’t find a definitive answer to "Can I use my credit card to buy a ticket for another person even if I’m not travelling?" However, they say they accept group bookings of up to 40 and I don’t imagine they’d ask for individual card details.

I know some airlines insist that the card holder must travel but it has to be worth trying. The worst that can happen is that it won’t work.
