Brillient, how lucky they are to excavate the place. Where is it located…I can`t find it on this hopeless map I have.

It’s about 20km ESE of Rethymno, Google Earth will take you to it, search for Eleftherna Crete.

There are signs for the village at the Arkadi Monastery, if it’s the same one – there are a few villages on Crete which have similar names – Episcopi, for instance, or Plakas…. :)

My neighbours went out that way in the last week or two for a drive, a gatehouse/ticket office has now been built at the entrance to the site, it was securely locked and no access was permitted.

Some information on the site here:

                            http://www.greekhotel.com/crete/rethymno/rethymnon-sightseeing/eleftherna.htm

It is many years since I was there, but the views from the promontory of Ancient Eleftherna are spectacular.

Dimos Arkadiou is believed to have many important archaeological sites. For example it is believed that where the village of Pigi now stands is not the original village. The archaeological department has stopped many properties being built in and around this area until they have time to finish their investigations.
