Your right Kefalas, I have kept the records and copy and pasted from Word for over 5 years and the original a month ago was posted in the same manner and displayed fine ??   but hey ho if I post in here I just need to make sure I find another source to copy from. :)
Didn’t realise the forum had changed and Word was no longer acceptable.

Thanks to all contributers. There were not as many contributers as usual this year (over 3 sites) so it would seem that the figures are now just about right.
Once again many thanks to all that contributed and anything further that comes in I will make amendments for next year.

p.s. whats with all the question mark thingys on the original post ??

quote Yomo2 ….Sometimes, I feel as though I want things to get worse so that the voters finally snap, and the politicians get what they deserve – on the end of a rope.
couldn’t agree more Yomo …. there is hardly a politician in the world that can be trusted to be honest in any way …the world needs a huge change away from career politicians with their own personal agendas.

Your estimate of 40 euro and 100 euro should be there or thereabouts Moggy.
One thing to consider, I often book with Thomas Cook when going to Agios Nikolaos, which is where we are going on Friday, and the transfer is included in the package price, but the journey on a bus from Heraklion airport to our hotel takes aprox 2.1/2 hours (many other hotel drop offs on the way) ..so I have a car at the airport which takes me 45 minutes. OK it costs me extra in fuel but after sitting on a plane for over 4 hours another 2.1/2 on a bus would drive me nuts. ….plus I get to the hotel first and get any problems sorted out before the crowd arrives.

                                hi Moggy
I hired a mid range car  …I think it was a suzuki swift ..could be wrong??  ..early april at Chania airport for a week it was £120,, and I will also be having a car at Heraklion on Friday coming , also for a week 140 euro …both booked through "economy cars" whom I discovered redirect you to a local hire company, but the car was in vg condition but there is a damage waver (£500 ish).  I normally book through "Athens cars" " whos prices are a little dearer but I now realise they offer full cover including damage waver, but cars can be a little older ..though I have used them many times and never had a problem.  Fridays car I have requested a Ford Fiesta but it depends on which company I am directed to   this week it is "National"   next trip I will go back to Athens cars as I know what to expect with them. ( and no damage waver to worry about) .
As topdriller mentioned I have been paying much the same prices for years , though a little dearer in peak season.

I’m in total agreement with you Gerald, we/local authorities/ EU Brussels are wrapping everyone up in cotton wool. Why?? because they think it is a vote winner or the right thing to do?. we are going to breed a society where everyone will be so sterile that any outbreak of whatever and we will all drop like flies.
In my past life I was a rep, out seeing customers all day, mixing with folks from all walks of life, for lunch I could be on a building site having a bacon roll and a mug of tea one day and the next in a nice cafe, or having a sandwich out of a garage. I was (touches wood) rarely if ever ill in comparison to my colleagues who were stuck in a sterile non smoking, non eating, air conditioned warm office all day. Why was I rarely ill?  because I mixed with every bug, germ, person etc on the planet and feel I built up a natural resistance to air born illnesses. ……the so called do gooders will sterilize us and eventually kill us all

Thanks for the reply Jon. :)
I do understand the financial side of running a business, ..they need the customers before they open up, taxes , rates, staff, all to be paid etc, but the customers were there, the airlines have started bringing people in, the hotels are putting them up ( be it they were only 33 to 50% full) and there was nowhere to spend their "tourist" money.
I just think that the tourist board, local authorities, airline companies etc need to get their act together better if they want to attract more business. i.e. once the airlines start bringing customers in the shops should be open and if they open at a reduced revenue flow then the local rates, taxes etc should also be reduced to encourage them to open. …Sorry Jon, I am ranting on but I just find it so frustrating that we all know the Greece/Crete tourist trade has the potential to do so much better and in their current financial state need every penny they can bring in ….but then again it wouldn’t be the Crete we know and love if they got to efficient?
Reference your comment on winter. We drove down the east side of Spain a few years ago in Feb-March, stopping off a couple of days at a time in different towns and I swear to god, one or 2 of the main streets had tumbleweed rolling down the centre of the "ghost towns" only time I had ever seen that was in the old cowboy movies, didn’t realise it actually happened.
Thanks again for your post Jon , I am just so passionate about Greece in general that I want to see them doing better and all I saw in April was lost revenue potential. …maybe its me that needs to learn to chill out ??

ON a different note, I get e-mails in from several travel companies encouraging me to go to Spain, Venice, Turkey, Florida, Egypt, etc etc and very little ever seems to be directing me towards Greece. ….. hey ho chill out Brian

I know this will be a bone of contention with some people, we just had our first visit to Agia Marina a few miles west of Chania, Agia Marina was ..ok! but we are unlikely ever to return as it was closed early April and obviously opens up purely to cater for tourists ..which is exactly what I try to avoid, preferring to spend my money at places that are open all year for business and part of the permanent local set up. I agree with Handy Harry in that the Cretians could learn by opening up at least a little longer in the year. When we were there (9th to 16th April) the hotels local to us were about half full and not a single restaurant within walking distance was open so we ate and drank at the hotel other than a few days we went into Chania (which was fabulous) …and yes before anyone reminds me, "I am a tourist (be it a regular one)", but I would rather support a company that is open all year rather than a company that employs temps in an effort to get seasonal money and in my opinion are not offering anything like the standard of food and service that the all year round companies do, and they tend to be more expensive.

Yup I’m still about also …I don’t get involved or allow myself to be dragged into politics of any description and I post on another site as well as this one.
We are not long back from the west of the island which was nice for a change, but will be back to our favourite, Agios Nikolaos on the 31st May.
Thanks for mentioning my "cost of living 2013" post latsida ….I would call you Christine but as we have never met I will stick with the more formal
latsida :), the response was disappointing this year but I can only assume we must be fairly accurate with the figures now, hence not a lot of need for folks to contribute corrections to my figures.
Another thought occurred to me, that like a lot of other people who  posted here we have a dream of moving to Crete, which in our case should have been this coming winter, but with not just Greece’s but the entire worlds economy being in such a mess we are staying put and looking more at long term lets ..at least until things settle down, and I have no doubt a lot of others are in the same position.

p.s. not to far from you guys in Egypt I hear they have just uncovered a new pyramid tomb and have discovered a mummy totally coated in chocolate ….Archaeologists believe it may be Pharaoh Roche.

We came out of the Maritime museum and walked back to the harbour and the restaurant we stopped at was either 1st or 2nd that we came to ..the bill was 12 euro each for set 3 course meal (2pm in afternoon) a couple of cocktails to tempt us in and a further couple of drinks the total bill was 28 euro and of course I left a tip, and a couple of days later at a different place the bill was similar (extra drinks)… one thing that was particularly impressive was the waiter hooking people in to the restaurant, I watched him having in depth conversations with Germans, French, Italians and Brits and asked him how many languages he spoke. …7 but his Spanish wasn’t very good :-X
The car (economy cars) came with quarter of a tank and expected to be returned the same ..I put 30 euro’s in it and didn’t use 10 ::)
As Jon said the taxi fair from the airport to Agia Marina should be around 40 euro and the best way is to just join the taxi queue at the airport which always has plenty taxi’s available (so I’m told) …enjoy your trip

I will try to be brief.
I went online to hire a taxi to and from the airport as this was an extra "relaxing" week on Crete ..to and from the airport was a total of 177 euro(quoted) so I hired a car 130 euro. when we got to the hotel we realised that the bus went from Agia Marina to Chania terminus for 1.60 euro and no hassle parking driving etc   …and more or less the same distance from Ag Marina to Chania as Chania to airport (we didn’t try the second leg), so I would imagine the fair would be around 2 euro and a bus every 20 or so minutes in April.
Our next trip to this side of the island we would probably stay within Chania town as we liked it so much, though the hotels in Chania don’t do half board, most do b&b, but to be honest it wasn’t anything like as expensive to eat out as we had imagined …i.e. nice 3 course meal for 2 with cocktails thrown in = 30 euro and that’s right on the harbour front.

p.s. it would be unfair of me to compare Agios Nikolaos with Chania …Agios Nikolaos is our favourite spot in the world, visited there about 16/17 times now, this was a first to Chania which had a different charm.

We have driven to Manchester in the past, being desperate to get over there as often as possible but to be honest the 4 hour drive in each direction is a killer especially on the return leg if you havent managed a nap on the plane. ….just occured to me, now that we are both retired and can afford the time,it may be worth a hotel booking and fly from Manchester or even Birmingham

We first started visiting Crete many years ago and flights from our home airport flew into heraklion and we quickly became familiar with and fell in love with Agios Nikolaos and surrounding area which we have now visited  ….jings must be about 16, 17, 18? times, we can now get flights with Ryanair into Chania, hence a visit to the west, booked a hotel near Agia Marina (Galini sea view) just looked nice on the net. Be there on Tuesday, got a car at the airport and taking the long way to the hotel to avoid driving through Chania which I have been advised to avoid with a car.
