http://menoumellada.ert.gr/en/ site gerald had a 10 minute wander round in it and its fantastic
lots of little videos from round the greek island, and a few webcams i wasnt aware of, will keep me going for a few days. Mostly in greek right enough :o but will give me another nudge to learning a little more, just the ticket for winter in Scotland.

and Eleni bet you have a chuckle when viewing webcams from britain, providing of course they aint stuck in the snow and ice ::)

Ok Ive got a choice now ..coffee and whiskey with the slippers on on front of the pc and tv .. or ….
a nice walk in the wind and rain 47 deg outside …… hmmmmm i will have to give it some thought ……..

            roll on april

One of the reasons a lot of you folks living in Crete, and a lot of people like myself would like to live their, is to escape this moronic behaviour that has become commonplace in britain.
i made the mistake last year of booking a hotel in Malia!!!!!!!, we stayed one night, in fairness the hotel was ok not great, but the people staggering round the town were just not our idea of what we want from a holiday.
Im ashamed to say the vast bulk of them were British young people(not all daft kids),
and i agree with Baccybabs, I do not like admitting abroad that Im from Britain.

im 54 and obviously old school, but the only way to deal with morons is short sharp punishment, jail them, and the british goverment should be removing their passports, so they cant travel abroad AS OUR AMBASSADORS.

i’d love to live on crete, but nowhere near malia, or any town that caters for drunks and loutish behaviour.

i may add, that a lot of the companies that advertise "18-30" holidays contribute to the problem, because they know fine the type of people they are taking to other countries to represent britain.

i feel like victor meldrew now

those figures i posted at top of the page , i feel are at least a year out of date, so from a personal point of view i’d add at least 10 to 20 % to it.
if im wrong i’d rather live in a bit of luxury, rather than struggle.
and as lshall05 said they are based on retiring in Greece/Crete

                            hi
also a crete wannabee but got a few years in britain yet before i get there.
i posted a similar question on this and a similar site in corfu a year or so back
basicly im told that to actualy live in greece/crete, a couple can have a decent lifestyle on around 12 to 15,000 euro a year, not allowing for house purchase/accomodation

                            Cost Of Living

The cost of living is substantially lower than in most countries yet reflects a comparable standard of living and a wonderful quality of life. Add a very low crime rate, low pollution, and plenty of sunshine and you have an extremely attractive package.
A couple living in Greece can expect to require an annual income of around £12,000 (17,000 Euro)

                            Example: –

House running costs + food 7,384
Two people eating out twice per week 2,080
                            Car Insurance 310
Petrol 5,000 miles per year at £2.25p per Gal 360
Return trip to the UK to visit family and friends 600
                            Contingency fund 1266
                            Total per year £ 12,000

How does that compare with your costs in the UK ?

The detailed breakdown of these costs is illustrated below.

                            House running Costs

House Running Costs for 2 people for one year.

                            Water 150
                            Electricity 400
                            Heating 400
                            House Insurance 350
Food for 2 people eating in. 6,084
                            Total £7.384 or 10,700 Euro

There are no rates on property in Greece if the building is less than 150m2

pinched that from another site…. hope it helps

dont know anything about this specific case but …
probabley in most countries you go by the local law!! it seems that a long time ago common sense went out the window in some cases, and people are now governed by the letter of the law …. someone quoted that farmer bloke that shot a man who was robbing him for the second time and the farmer went to prison madness most of us would have done similar in his circumstances then the would be burglar tried to sue the farmer for damages as he was unfit to work and our law was allowing him to do so … fortunatley for the farmer a local paper spotted the burglar in town riding a bike hence he was fit to work ..
the world is a mad bad place. with greedy people everywhere

hey ho as they say ;D scary driving though

funny enough we noticed last trip to Zakynthos and last few trips to Crete (we tend to go at beginning and end of seasons) that there are lots of bus stops :) but few buses :( and there timing is greek ;D so to get around you realy need a car ….may be difffferent peak season.

but as you say folks the greeks are lovely but not perfect same as the rest of us.

may be over again in june, if not early september

                                    thanks for replies :D

gouves/gournia is a good bet for a quiet break, im going there myself in 2 weeks and then go onto agios nicolas, also very nice, much bigger town, lots of walks in the town and lots to see.
The lake lit up at night with all the little restuarants round it you have to at least see once …gorgeous and should be not to busy in september.

p.s. im not resident in crete but visit both of these places as often as possible

then theres almarida, plaka, sissi the list of nice spots is endless ;D
but as someone else pointed out gouves and agios nicolas are reasonabley flat for gentle walkers.

                                            NOOOOO!!!!
sorry … have to agree with geckophile on this one, leave the karaoke type bars in benidorm and lets not tempt the football top brigade into greece.

on a similar subject..ive noticed that most of the greek islands have a corner of each island where they tend to shepard the 18-30 crowd to,
                                            i.e.

i wonder if this is done on purpose????

p.s. im up for a good time, before i get called boring, but lets try and learn from the disaster called spain, and leave the poorer points of our culture in britain ( and now unfortunatley spain)

                                                            yup real nice programme
this is the second series, the first series Tonya Buxton travelled round several greek islands including crete, but this second series is all on Cyprus where her family live.
if you are intrested in the first series , discovery channel run it every now and then at the eweekend and show all shows one after the other over a 3 or 4 hour session
i keep meaning to tape it, but always seem to switch on after 3 shows :'(

as for getting recipies off of their web site i think you have to pay for them (£2 )
apart from good cooking its lovley scenery in the background
