            yup
im still in britain and agree with every point made
most ppl leaving, are doing so to move to a better way of life and get out of the unpleasant and still falling standards here
It sometimes feels  if you are a worker in britain (and i have been my whole life)  you are  just a target for our goverment to squeeze.
law and order ???  where ?
health service.   ok if you can afford to wait for 6 months.
as a tax payer i think im the only sod that dosent get a grant or hand out here

use public transport! we get told,  what??and risk being mugged? late for appointments and spend an extra 2 hours a day travelling ? :o

you get an idea of why i want to move eh?

                    hmmmmm
are we fighting amongst ourselves ?? :o   thats kind of british ::)

ray has obviously made a statement, and upset a few of us along the way!
i visit crete/greece on a regular basis 3 or 4 times a year, and one day hope to settle there.
i do see where ray is coming from, though fortunatley the type of people he refers to are in the minority.

traveling or living abroad as in living anywhere is all about good manners and a certain amount of ..good taste?
i to get annoyed when i see my countrymen out on their holiday complaining that they cant get a "proper breakfast"  while they sit there in their football tops and rediculous baggy shorts, then wandering in and out of churches barely dressed taking photos …..grrrrrr ..its just bad manners.
living there permanently of course is a lot different, you have got to go at least part way to envelope the greek culture and way of life to survive, and of course retain some of our own culture as a comfort zone of things familiar.

we go to places like greece to live because of

                    1.the weather
2.the standard of living in relation to price
3.the more pleasant way of life and people

reverse them to see why we leave britain!!!!

the least we can do is let the greeks see we aprecciate their way of life and are making an effort to adapt to it.
as another poster said ..one of the reasons some of us leave britain is the influx of imigrants to britain who bring their culture and make little or no effort to adapt to ours.

                    efcharisto & kalenichta ;D

hey even visitors are allowed to learn a little greek  :)
(even if they cant spell it) :o

                        hi folks :)
thought i’d chip in my 2 cents worth.
i holiday on crete and the greek islands as often as possible.
i am also one of these lucky people that rarely catches cold etc..but
have to agree with satcure/martin about plane air systems, i catch a bloomin cold every other time i get on one   and if i dont my wife does :-/

also fruit and veg if a regular part of your diet all contribute to the immune system ,,,personally not keen on fruit but i do eat a lot of veg, specialy when in greece  as the quality seems so much better than back in britain, and lets be honest the average diet particularly in crete is superb.
you guys go out for a quick lunch and have souvlaki or a nice veg dish baked in the oven and some salad, i go out for a quick lunch here and have a pie or a sandwich :(  ..not quite the same.

may we all live long lives in the sun  ;D

                                hi allan
ive been back and forwards to crete twice this year, last was september also been to zante in october. Flew with 3 different airlines (none olympic) and coming out of britain restrictions were fairly tight (wife lost all her make up at customs).
as others have said, laptop is ok and counts as your hand luggage but they take it out of the bag and screen it seperatley (leaving britain), but on the way back from greece to britain noone bothered there shirt what we were carrying :o other than the overall weight of our suitcases

you are a few years ahead of me ref buying a house in crete.
all the sites i’ve looked at recommend you hire an independant lawyer with only your intrest at heart.
The reputable builder may be well intended but as other post says, if there is a conflict who will the lawyer side with ?? a one of client or a regular income from a builder??
                                    if your uncomfortable act now.

                                        realy enjoyed that thread ;D
lots of good points, and agree with Miriam "we are all different and have different needs" but can also see R I C ‘s point having a place in britain can give you an easy "get out " clause rather than tackle the problems in your new home.
having a teenage son starting college, i will have a few years to make my mind up, but to be honest "best of both worlds" sounds good to me :).
but ….then there is the added expense of 2 homes 2 cars etc so ive still got some weighing up to do.

and congrats to Geoff ;D , good to hear fortune is being kind to you and not depriving us of your good nature and advice for to long.

yaaaaay ;D had a ball in crete and learned a lot.
landed at heraklion on 28th may and spent a few days in gouves, loved it and that whole area,
visited malia, hersonnissososos etc. much bigger than we expected, though can see what others have implied in that some of these villages could close down in winter.
stayed at the magda hotel in gouves,(superb, deffinatley recommend it). we had booked all inclusive, which in retrospect was a mistake.
The food in the hotel was pretty good but we feel we missed out on a lot of the terrific tavernas along the front, but you live and learn, and we tried a few anyway, next time we will go bed and breakfast.
moved on after 3 days to "kato", a small village 3 kilometers before georgioupoli, from there we were going to see a few houses around vamos, kefalas, plaka area.
To be honest not our cuppa, to many mountains, a good example of ..you realy got to go and see the place. we stayed at the eliros hotel in this area, to be honest it was ….ok! ..i think we were only brits in it.
met one of this sites best contributers whom i wont embarrace by mentioning her name, but got some good pointers and advice regarding house hunting.
There were a lot more well populated villages than we expected, and one nicer than the other
rethymno was fabulous, iraklion more industrial and we didnt get to see chania.

next trip to crete i think we will look at north east side. its a big, big island and will take quite a few visits to cover even some of it.
So all in all we had a ball and learned a bit more of what we want from a house in crete, but the searching is half the fun. ;D
                                                    thanks for all comments

pretty open minded at the moment depends what we see ref old v’s new build but probabley new.
large town ?? just all the usual facilities shops, medical centre, etc
a few priorities would be connected to mains water electricity and phone/internet.
hence why i asked for feedback, as i understand that some areas in crete do not get phone connections or may have problems with water supply.
deffinaitley do not want to be in an eldorado situation :( ex pats in the area would be nice, but dont want to move to blackpool in the sun.

In tavernas I find it easier to hold the shell in one hand (use a serviette if they’re hot) and use a toothpick to extract the blighter.

                                                                    hi dave
im thinking along the same lines and am a week or 2 in front of you, i have already spoken to a few estate agents/ builders.
it would seem the first thing you need is a licence, to let property and then of course a tax number to pay up
i have been told ( without checking) that if you buy a new build of reasonable quality, that you will get a licence either with the property or it easily applied for
( always suspicious of the word easy !) which will allow you to let on a weekly basis.
but if you buy an older property, if you get a licence at all, it will be for long term lets only (minimum one month)

and like yourself im wondering how much potential there is to let, the more they build the harder it will get.

                                                                    brian
