It’s me again, the one with the old camper. I have lived on Crete before but in the Extreme South East (Ierapetra), however I have been also researching West Crete as moving there permanent this year.
It’s a difficult one in a sense; when you say close to coast do you mean walk out of door go 50 meters and sit on beach or rather 5-10 mins in a car from your home? A lot of the villages set back from coast are fascinating places to live and of course are year round.
North or South – obviously in the South it’s a couple of hours drive to main hubs like Chania or Rethymno. Only year round on South coast I can think of is Paleohora.. I would choose North as you can run a day trip or a night over to the South anytime.
Lots of North coast slightly inland villages as said, coastal ones a good few small towns/villages also… Starting with largest Chania itself, then Rethymno then Kastelli Kissamos.
West of Chania mainly touristique until Kastelli area, East of Chania a couple of niceish spots around Souda bay that don’t close in winter.
Others will know better, get back to you on around Rethymno as better do some work now or will never get to Crete!

Welcome Richard & Carmen, newbie here myself, on way to Crete in my old camper van, presently on Corfu expect to land Crete end of September, might beat you to a long term rental (although I shall be looking at budget end) but should have picked up some info to share by end of year. Western Cret myself from 15 miles west of Rethymno right to Kastelli Kissamos or maybe even on the South coast, don’t know yet.

I received the following answer from my MP about continuity of UK State Pension upgrades and reciprocal health care provisions.

Your question about BREXIT, it is possible that British state pensions could be frozen for ex-pats as they are already in many other non-EU countries, such as Australia Canada, South Africa, as the law allows freezing of the pension, unless reciprocal arrangements are in place.   At present NHS treatment is free for those with a European Health Insurance Card and UK state pensioners living in the European Economic Area. However, it is possible that if Britain exits the EU, expats would have to buy private health insurance or pay for treatment.

BREXIT would be unknown territory, if Britain was to leave negotiations with the EU and/or individual States on a full range of issues that affect expats would have to take place.  Whether or not the outcome of any agreements was to the benefit or detriment to UK citizens living abroad would have to be seen.”

I hope you expats have got your voting papers sorted and ready for keeping us Brits in the EU to help protect and ensure our financial security.

If you need to register for UK voting go to the British Embassy, Athens website.

Have any of you obtained dual UK/Greek nationality, if so what benefits does it give you?

Thank you Fowles, BREXIT has now been posted separately.
Yes we will continue to receive our pensions unchanged if UK stays in the EU.
However, out of the EU and we will not enjoy the benefits of annually upgraded pensions nor will reciprocated health benefits apply unless things are re- negotiated totally between UK and EU or individual nations..

UK Pensions wiil remain static and unchanged as they do for Expats living in Canada, S.Africa.

So make sure you get your vote in!

Yes I received one on the very date that I had a fright seeing my bank account had not been credited with my pension as usual. A quick call to DWP IPC got my pension reinstated but not until the following week! Cert was signed by Piraeus bank manager Vamos, no problem- he was used to it !

Took the opportunity to berate DWP for stupidly assuming the post always gets through and that they should send follow up letters in cases like this.

I’ve noticed that it is usually the important DWP and HMRC letters that go astray- again usually the replies to those where I send questions in letters by registered post and they fail to do me the courtesy of a like response.

FINAL QUESTION- is nobody out there bothered about a BREXIT happening?
As a pensioner I would have to vote to stay in if I felt that my UK pension rights were not going to be protected. Same with UK health care provisions -questions to the UK departments and MP remain unanswered as usual.

                                Any comments?

Anyway at which market can you get fresh raspberries in season?
I’ve seen parsnips for sale occasionally in Pear tree, Almyrida and Greengibbles shop in Litsarda, but still want the challenge of growing my own, if possible, for which I’ve had no answers yet!

At this point I can only go by what I saw at the time I bought this house inJune, the box came with it and previous owner showed me what was possible. The programmes in which he was interested did not include BBC-said you need a different card for that, presume he meant subscription- but he received ITV and sports channels. Generalisations, I know, but then I’m not interested in sport or ITV! If you are seriously interested I can e-mail previous owner.
